Tragedy as person dies on railway line at Darlington

A person has been found dead on the rail line between a major route in the North East.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on the line at Darlington from approximately 2am onwards this morning (July 8). Police officers were in attendance, alongside paramedics who sadly pronounced the person dead at the scene.

The incident led to rail closures on the rail between Darlington and Newcastle and disruption is expected to last until 2pm today.

The services affected by the rail line closures include CrossCountry, LNER, Lumo between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross, Northern between Carlisle and Saltburn and TransPennine Express between Newcastle and York / Liverpool Lime Street.

A National Rail spokesperson said: "The emergency services are dealing with an incident between Newcastle and Darlington and as a result, all lines are closed.

"Trains running through these stations may be cancelled or revised.

"Major disruption is expected until 2pm."

Investigations are now ongoing to identify the deceased person and the full circumstances behind their death is currently unknown.

A spokeswoman for the British Transport Police confirmed that a casualty was found on the tracks at the line in Darlington and sadly was found to have passed away.

She said: "Officers were called to the line in Darlington at 2am following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are currently working to identify the person and establish the full circumstances behind their death."
