Tragedy as person dies after being hit by train on Edinburgh line

A person has died after being hit by a train between Edinburgh and Newcraighall, police have confirmed.

Emergency services rushed to Abbeyhill Junction at around 2pm on Saturday with trains quickly cancelled following the incident.

We previously told how both ScotRail and LNER advised customers of a delay and cancellations on social media with replacement buses offered to travellers.

Officers have now confirmed a person died following the incident. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

ScotRail worked quickly to get trains and staff back into position after emergency services confirmed it was safe to run trains shortly after 3pm.

A British Transport Police spokesperson told the Record: “Officers were called to Abbeyhill Junction at 14:02 following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended. However, sadly, a person has been pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”
