One of the oldest giraffes in the UK has sadly passed away aged 22.
Blair Drummond Safari Park said that it was "deeply saddened to announce the peaceful passing" of its giraffe Kelly on May 23.
Staff stated that she had recently been experiencing "age-related health problems" and following a health screen, it was decided that putting her to sleep was "the best course of action".
Kelly, who was born in 2000 at Chester Zoo and arrived at Blair Drummond in 2010, is survived by her daughter Bella, who continues to reside at the safari park.
According to staff, Kelly was "very much the shyer of the two and was well-known for her lovely, gentle nature", and "became an integral part of the Blair Drummond family".
Lead veterinarian Romain Pizzi commented: "Through detailed diagnostic testing and a post-mortem examination, we sadly discovered several health issues primarily associated with the natural effects of aging.
"While no single organ had failed outright, the combined impact of these conditions led to a decline in her metabolism, ultimately preventing her from maintaining her body condition."
Deputy Large Mammal Team Leader Shonagh Bell added: "Kelly was a contentedly shy giraffe but when she warmed to you it felt like such an honour to be in her company. We miss her so much."
Blair Drummond took to Facebook to announce the news and before long the post had received hundreds of comments from visitors and well-wishers sharing their thoughts on Kelly's passing.
One wrote: "Hugs to the keepers, she gave so many people pleasure and will be missed by us all."
"My condolences to all who cared and loved Kelly," said a second, while a third shared: "Will always remember that cute smile."
