Tragedy as man dies after being hit by train at a Cheshire railway station

A man has died after being hit by a train at a Cheshire railway station, police have confirmed tonight. The tragedy is being investigated, according to British Transport Police, and the resulting closure of lines is having a knock-on effect to some services in Greater Manchester.

Cheshire Police were called to Hartford railway station, near Northwich, at around 4pmtoday - Monday. That followed a reports of a man being hit by a train. Once officers and paramedics arrived at the scene the station was closed to all trains and British Transport Police were called.

British Transport Police has confirmed when emergency services arrived at the scene, the man was already dead. Officers are currently working to identify the man and inform their next of kin.

A spokesperson from British Transport Police, reports the Liverpool Echo, said: "British Transport Police were called to the line near Hartford at 4pm today (May 2) following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended and sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are currently working to identify the deceased and inform their next of kin. The incident is not being treated as suspicious."

According to National Rail the line between Liverpool Lime Street and Crewe has 'severe delays' with London Northwestern and Avanti West Coast services being suspended between the two stations.

Traffic Monitoring Service INRIX, meanwhile, says: "Service suspended on London Northwestern between Liverpool Lime Street and Crewe due to emergency services dealing with an incident. Tickets to be accepted on Merseyrail, Northern and East Midlands Railway services between Liverpool Lime Street and Liverpool South Parkway."

National Railway Enquires reported disruption to services would continue until 8.30pm.

They said services affected were Avanti West Coast between Edinburgh / Glasgow Central / Lancaster / Blackpool North / Liverpool Lime Street and London Northwestern Railway between Liverpool Lime Street and Birmingham New Street.

"A person has been hit by a train between Warrington Bank Quay and Crewe. As all lines are currently closed, trains may be cancelled or diverted until approximately 20:30.

"Rail replacement buses will be in operation between Liverpool South Parkway and Crewe."
