Tragedy as huge police search operation at River Mersey ends with man found dead

A man has been found dead following a huge search operation at the River Mersey, in Stockport.

Emergency services rushed to Knightsbridge, in the town centre, at around 11.15am this morning (Sunday November 6). A wide cordon was put in place, as police, firefighters and underwater search teams scrambled to the scene.

It followed reports of a concern for welfare of a man in the river. A man's body was found and he was pronounced dead, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed.

A GMP spokesman said: “At around 11:15am this morning (Sunday 6 November 2022), GMP officers received a report of concern for the welfare of a man in the River Mersey in Stockport. Emergency services and specialist officers attended and a man was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene. Officers will remain at the scene to conduct further enquiries and determine the circumstances surrounding this incident.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) added: “Just after 12pm on Sunday 6 November fire crews were called to an incident off Knightsbridge in Stockport. Fire engines from Whitehill and Stalybridge, as well as the technical rescue unit from Leigh and the water incident unit from Eccles, are in attendance.

"GMFRS crews are assisting colleagues from GMP and North West Ambulance Service (NWAS). Knightsbridge is closed between Lancashire Hill and Great Portwood Street and people are asked to avoid the area where possible.”
