Traffic on M53 stopped for two hours over concerns for safety of woman

Traffic was queued for miles after vehicles on the M53 were halted following the concern for the safety of a woman.

Merseyside Police were called at around 6pm on Monday, November 14, following a report of concern for a woman on the Mount Road bridge, Wirral. Once officers arrived at the scene they immediately closed the road, which is part of the Clatterbridge roundabout, as well as closing parts on the M53 at junction five (Clatterbridge).

The closures caused heavy traffic in on the M53 both north and southbound. Traffic did not move for over an hour as Merseyside Police, the North West Ambulance Service and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene.

The woman came down from the bridge at around 8.40pm and was taken to hospital by officers. All of the roads reopened a short time later.

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm emergency services were called at 6.20pm this evening, Monday 14 th November, to a bridge on Mount Road in Wirral, close to the M53, following concern for the safety of a woman. Patrols attended and the woman has now been taken to hospital.

"Roads in the area, which were closed as a precaution, are in the process of being reopened."
