TRAFFIC came to a halt after a crash on Stockton Bridge on Thursday evening.
The call came in about 6.17pm and the Newcastle Herald understands emergency services had some difficulty reaching the scene due to the traffic pile-up.
A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said she understood an elderly person may have suffered a medical episode while behind the wheel.
Paramedics treated a woman in her 60s at the scene and she was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition. She suffered pelvic and chest injuries in the crash.
Drivers were urged to use caution and avoid the area where possible with the clean-up taking some time. The road reopened about 7.30pm.
Police will now investigate the cause of the incident.
