Toyota is pushing the European Union to count some gasoline-powered cars as zero-emission. Not because their tailpipes stop producing CO2, but because of what fuels them. The automaker calls its proposal a request for "partnership and pragmatism."
The category is called VEEF, short for vehicles running exclusively on eligible renewable fuels. It would give qualifying combustion cars the same regulatory status as battery electrics, provided they never burn anything else.
