Toy Story 5, Frozen 3, and Zootropolis are in the works, says Disney

Disney has recently confirmed its plan for a number of sequels for some of its most “unrivalled brands and franchises”.

During Disney’s Q1 earnings call, it was revealed by Disney CEO Bob Iger their plans for a number of sequels were “in the works”.

Iger hinted at the return of some of the most successful Disney films, including new Frozen and Toy Story films.

“Today, I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy Story, Frozen, and Zootopia [Zootropolis],” Iger announced.

He added, “We’ll have more to share about these productions soon. But this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivalled brands and franchises.”

The sequel announcement comes as little surprise considering the immense popularity and box office success the three franchises achieved.

Toy Story franchise success

The first Toy Story film was released in 1995, with three follow-ups including Toy Story 2 (1999), Toy Story 3 (2010), and Toy Story 4 (2019).

The Toy Story franchise has earned around $3.03 billion (£2.49 billion) at the global box office and was also Disney’s biggest animated series and one of Pixar’s cornerstone franchises.

Disney’s Frozen franchise success

Frozen was released in 2013 and earned two Academy Awards in 2014, which included Best Animated Feature (the first Walt Disney Animation Studios film to win in this category), and Best Original Song.

Frozen took in $1.28 billion (£105 billion) globally and sold 4.1 million soundtracks by June 2016.

Zootropolis franchise success

Zootropolis (also known as Zootopia in the US) was released in 2016, produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, and released by Walt Disney Pictures.

The film grossed $341.3 million (£281.5 million) in the US and Canada and $682.5 million (£563.1 million) in other countries for a worldwide total of $1.024 billion (£844.5 million).
