A town centre road will be closed for up to 14 months as work is set to begin on a Merseyside skyscraper.
Earlier this year it was announced that a "Tower of Hope" is looking to be built on the site of the current Grand Casino on Lord Street, Southport. The plans were announced by the Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group, a company that already owns a number of ventures in the area.
The tower, named the Tower of Hope, will stand 178 metres tall, housing 140 apartments from one-bedroom to three-bedrooms, a restaurant, 109 five star hotel rooms, a wedding venue, a bar and a car park. The plans, although not formally submitted to the council, are already underway with building work currently ongoing at the casino.

It has now been confirmed by Sefton Council that Court Road will be shut for up to 14 months while the 48 storey building is built. The road is currently partially closed with a patch of artificial grass and benches currently sitting in front of the Lord Street Hotel, also run by the Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group.
The road closure may also affect customers at Farmfoods and residents in the area. The report said: "Court Road / Lord Street Service Road from its junction with Union Street for a distance of 66m in a north-easterly direction be temporarily closed to all vehicles for a period of 14 months. The Head of Locality Services is authorised to execute the necessary legal procedures to advertise the Council’s intention."
Following the announcement of the plans to build the tallest building in Merseyside, people's opinions were split. Commenting on the ECHO's story Mrs Krone said: "Ridiculous proposal." Sunnie14 also wrote: "Waste of money, other important things could spend money on."
