A fire at a block of flats in London has seen a woman rescued after 70 firefighters were called the scene.
Around 10 fire engines and firefighters were dispatched after what was reported to be a five-roomed, eighth floor apartment went up in flames tonight sending smoke soaring into the sky above the capital.
The London Fire Brigade fielded as many as 40 calls from worried members of the public from 10.33pm on Monday night and a total of four people were said to have been rescued, MyLondon reports.
A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said the four were rescued via an internal staircase by firefighters wearing breathing kit.
They were assessed on scene by London Ambulance Service crews and another person was taken to hospital.
A total of 20 people were also evacuated from the building in New Village Avenue in Tower Hamlets, London.
Fire crews from Plaistow, East Ham, Greenwich, Shoreditch and surrounding fire stations headed to the scene and had brought the fire under control by 11.48pm.
Investigations are taking place to find the cause of the fire.
Tower Hamlets Police also confirmed that they were in attendance in an 11.44pm post on their official Twitter account that read: "Officers from Central East BCU are on scene assisting colleagues from the LFB & LAS in response to this incident."
Station commander Matt Williams described what equipment was used to put out the fire.
He said: "One of the Brigade's new 32-metre ladders from Old Kent Road Fire Station was used as a water tower and crews also used drones to provide an aerial view of the incident and increase situational awareness."
