Tourist falls into Mount Vesuvius crater while taking selfie on forbidden route

A tourist has been injured during a fall into the Mount Vesuvius crater while taking a selfie on a "forbidden route".

The incident happened on Saturday when the young man and his family reached the summit of the famous volcano in the Italian city of Naples.

The 23-year-old was reportedly using his phone to take a selfie when it slipped from his hands and fell into the crater.

He then is said to have attempted to retrieve the device by descending into the crater before falling several meters after losing his balance.

Emergency services were scrambled and managed to pull him from the crater.

Remarkably, the man suffered only cuts and cruises on his arms and legs.

He was reportedly visiting the famous natural landmark relatives.

The group have now been charged with the invasion of public land, reports Wanted in Rome.

Mount Vesuvius is among the most active volcanos in Italy and is regarded by experts as one of the world's most dangerous.

The US visitor is said to have fallen in the crater of the famous which towers above the city of Naples.

It happened on Saturday after he and three relatives ignored the visitor centre and instead took an alternative "forbidden" route to the top,

He reportedly fell inside after losing his footing and was rescued by Italian police and treated for his injuries by emergency services who had arrived at the scene.

The man, his relations and two others were then warned by police for taking the prohibited route had highly dangerous and out-of-bound signs warning them from using it.

The Mirror told in February how a US volcano could erupt in 2022 in a disastrous event that could affect thousands of residents and cause millions of dollars worth of damage, researchers fear.

Mount Hood is an active volcano located 50 miles south east of Portland, Oregon, and one of the highest mountains in the States.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) ranks it as the fourth-most threatening volcano in the US which means it is currently being monitored.

Experts warn Mount Hood could flare up next year but "only time will tell when the next eruption will occur" reports the Express.

A 45-minute earthquake swarm was reported near the site in early 2021, which is typically a sign of something to come.

It is also considered the most likely of five volcanoes to erupt in Oregon, as featured in a short documentary by YouTube channel underworld.

Scientists believe that the most likely Mount Hood eruption would bring the most deadly of all volcanic hazards.

This comes in form of a collapsed lava dome, or pyroclastic flow, with fast-moving clouds full of hot gas and volcanic matter that hurtle down the volcano slope.

These move at average speeds of 62mph and can reach up to 430mph in some instances, with temperatures of up to 1,000C.
