Tour Helicopter Crash Off Kauai Coast Leaves One Dead

Fatal crash near Dunnellon, Florida

One person has tragically lost their life, and two others are currently missing following a devastating helicopter crash off the coast of Kauai, a popular tourist destination in Hawaii. The incident occurred near the Hanakoa Valley along the Na Pali Coast on Thursday afternoon, as reported by the Kaua‘i Police Department.

Authorities were alerted to the crash by hikers who witnessed the helicopter plunging into the water. By 2:25 p.m., one individual was found deceased, while a search operation involving multiple agencies was launched to locate the missing passengers.

The pilot of the helicopter was a local resident, while the two passengers are believed to be visitors from the mainland, according to Kaua’i Police Chief Todd Raybuck.

Search and rescue efforts, which had been temporarily halted at sundown on Thursday, resumed on Friday with county crews and the US Coast Guard combing the area for any signs of the missing individuals. Fire Chief Michael Gibson mentioned that shark presence was a factor in the search, with a focus on surface water for potential survivors.

The helicopter involved in the crash was identified as a Robinson R44 and was operated by Ali’i Kauai Air Tours and Charters. Helicopter tours are a popular activity in Hawaii, offering tourists aerial views of the picturesque landscape. However, safety concerns have been raised in light of previous fatal incidents involving tour helicopters in the state.

Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz highlighted that Hawaii has witnessed the highest number of air tour crash fatalities in the country, with over 85 deaths recorded since the NTSB began keeping records. In response to the recent crash, the FAA has implemented a temporary flight restriction in the area as investigations by both the FAA and NTSB are ongoing.

Our thoughts are with the families affected by this tragic event, and authorities are working diligently to locate the missing passengers and provide support during this challenging time.
