Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio was able to pull off a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles to move down from No. 13 overall to No. 15 in Round 1 of the 2022 NFL draft.
As a result, the Texans added some extra capital and also were in position to take a player they liked in former Texas A&M guard Kenyon Green. The Atascocita High School product stays around in the Houston area to play for his hometown team.
According to Mark Schofield from the Touchdown Wire, the Texans’ selection of Green was worthy of a B grade.
A true mauler whether he’s in zone or gap concepts, Green leads with a very strong run-blocking skill set, and he’s good enough in pass pro to make a decent go of it at tackle. He’ll be an asset to any balanced offense in which the run game sets the tone, and if he can work on the finishing aspects of his game, and cut down on the penalties (six holding calls in 2021), he’ll be a plus starter very quickly.
What Green is able to do is let Tytus Howard stay at right tackle. The Texans now have competent bookends with Howard on the right side and two-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil on the other side. The Texans no longer have to experiment with kicking Howard inside at guard. The Aggie can now take either guard spot and learn plenty about the game from veteran center Justin Britt.
