Tottenham Women's Super League clash with Leicester City postponed due to frozen pitch

Tottenham's Women's Super League clash with Leicester City has been postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Rehanne Skinner's side were due to welcome the Foxes to Brisbane Road on Sunday afternoon, with Spurs looking to bounce back from last weekend's narrow defeat to Aston Villa and avoid their sixth consecutive loss in the WSL. Leicester meanwhile were set to travel to East London off the back of their first league victory of the season; Willie Kirk's side having beaten Brighton 3-0 last time out to renew their hopes of top-flight survival.

However, Tottenham confirmed on Saturday the fixture will now be played at a later date owing to the icy weather.

A statement on the club's website read: "Our home fixture against Leicester City tomorrow (Sunday 22 January) at Brisbane Road has been postponed due to a frozen pitch.

"Details for our rescheduled fixture will be announced in due course and all tickets purchased for the original fixture will remain valid for the rescheduled date."

It's the second time this season Spurs have been forced to cancel a fixture at Brisbane Road, with November's meeting with Everton postponed just hours before kick-off due to a waterlogged pitch. The Everton postponement sparked an uproar among WSL fans and players alike, with many questioning why incidents of this nature are still taking place in the top tier of the women's game.

Everton midfielder, Izzy Christiansen, was one of those who took to social media to share her frustrations. In a tweet, she said: "“We want women’s football to be elite, visible, with fan bases growing by the week” etc etc…

"Postponing games so late doesn’t bode well for the above… Very disappointed about today… Apologies to our travelling fans, hope you get home safely!"

Fellow Everton star, defender Megan Finnigan, also voiced her opinion on the matter in a tweet that read, "Professional league", alongside a host of angry emojis. Her post was retweeted by a number of other Everton players, including midfielder Gabby George.

Spurs are set to be in action at Brisbane Road again on Wednesday when they host Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the Continental League Cup.
