Tottenham 1-2 Fulham: Premier League – as it happened

John Brewin was at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium tonight, and here’s his report. Thanks for reading this MBM.

Marco Silva gives his reaction to Sky. “Very proud of the boys … they have been speaking about the games on the road … it was very important for us to win … we knew it would happen one day … what a great first half from us … we probably should have scored more first half … the first 35 minutes the control was there … we created a lot of problems for them … second half we suffered … probably more than we should … we didn’t start well … they started to boost their confidence … our decisions were not at the best level … from 75 to 80 minutes we started to go again playing our way … control more of the game … a well-deserved three points … great win for us … we are very pleased.”

Guglielmo Vicario is asked by Sky how upsetting it is to be booed by his own supporters. “Look, it is part of football … I’m a big man … the fans have the right to do what they think … probably it’s on us to try to stay more calm … focus on ourselves … our gameplan … we are lacking a bit of composure … today it’s a bad defeat and tough to accept … we would like to lead the game so we don’t have to chase it … we tried … we pushed … we missed a little bit of calmness and composure … it is what it is, a bad defeat … we apologise for the result … it is painful now … we were ready to fight … so it is completely different to the one we suffered last weekend [against Arsenal] … we have to analyse as a group.”

Frank continues: “We rushed it too much in the first half … second half much better … we got a bit of momentum … chances and opportunities … we couldn’t get the second goal … we badly want to win at home … you need to be cool, stick to the plan … easier said than done … it is OK that the fans are frustrated … we have not won at home for too long … but during the game … I hope it’s one instance and it never happens again … we must be as calm as possible and do everything we can to work through it … we just need to keep working … the second half was much better and looked like something we can use … we have a tough spell … keep doing what we believe in.”

Frank: Booing of Vicario 'unacceptable'

Thomas Frank starts his interview with Sky Sports, and he’s not happy. “When you are down 2-0 after six minutes there is a mountain to climb … when you are in a bad spell everything seems to go against you … the first one is a deflected shot, the second one is a mistake … that happened … I didn’t like that our fans booed [Guglielmo Vicario] straight after and a few times he touched the ball … they can’t be true Tottenham fans … everyone supports each other when you are on the pitch … we do everything we can to perform … afterwards the booing, no problem, but not during, that is unacceptable in my opinion.”

The match-winner Harry Wilson speaks to Sky Sports. “We needed that … we spoke before the game about getting our first [away] win on the board … we started amazingly … really put them under pressure … we dug deep and deserved the three points … back-to-back wins have been really good for us … I saw the keeper was in a sticky situation … I realised no-one was on the line … as soon as it left my foot I knew it was going in … I was a bit surprised none of their back four went to defend the line … I feel like I’m in a rhythm … sharp and strong … try and climb that table because that’s where we want to be.”

Tottenham’s xG in the end was 0.86. A long way up from their first-half total of 0.07, but still nowhere near good enough, below 1.0 for the sixth time in seven home games this season. (Thanks to Sky for that one.) Fulham’s xG was 0.42, like they’ll care about that tonight. They’ve just won their third Premier League game in four, while Spurs have lose all three of their fixtures this week. Everything in context.

To confirm Fulham’s consolidation of 15th spot and their edging closer to mid-table comfort: the all-new Premier League table! Spurs will slip into the bottom half tomorrow should either Manchester United or Liverpool take a point from their games at Crystal Palace and West Ham United respectively. Their chance of rising to fifth this evening scuppered by 136 seconds of defensive calamity.

Tottenham were much improved in the second half. Problem is, the bar was set so low it was almost subterranean, because they were abysmal in the first period. Fulham flew out of the blocks and quickly established a two-goal lead that would prove enough. The Cottagers were lively in attack during those early exchanges, albeit assisted by some woeful defending, a practically non-existent Spurs midfield, and an almighty clanger from Guglielmo Vicario. Spurs offered some resistance in the second half, mainly through Mohammed Kudus and Pedro Porro down the right. The former scored a cracker, while Porro put in the hard yards, plus quite a few deliveries that nobody in white managed to get on the end of. He storms off down the tunnel taking his shirt off in the down-to-business style. Penny to be a fly on the dressing-room wall when he tells his team-mates how he sees it. But as bad as Spurs were overall, the visitors deserve their victory, and consolidate 15th spot, moving closer in points terms to mid-table respectability.

Updated

FULL TIME: Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Fulham

Marco Silva celebrates. Thomas Frank wears the drained look of a condemned man. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium erupts in booing.

Updated

90 min +3: Danso throws long from the left. Andersen absolutely bashes a header clear. Tete bursts down the right and is tugged back by Kolo Muani. That might be enough to see Fulham over the line. They’re certainly not going to rush over the free kick.

90 min +1: Porro has sent plenty of decent crosses in from the right. Not this time. Straight out for a goal kick. Leno takes his sweet time over the restart and goes into the book.

90 min: There will be four additional minutes.

89 min: Thomas Frank prowls the touchline, gesticulating desperately. How precious an equaliser would be to the under-fire Spurs boss.

88 min: Sky point out that Kevin’s recent shot was Fulham’s first effort on target since Harry Wilson’s sixth-minute goal. It’s been a weird, lop-sided match.

87 min: Castagne replaces Iwobi as Fulham bolster their defence.

86 min: Odobert nearly gets the better of Andersen down the left but settles for a corner. Porro curls it into the six-yard box. Tete clears at the near post. Porro sends it back in, and that’s easy for Leno.

85 min: Tel comes on for Udogie.

84 min: Bentancur slides in on Kevin, just to the left of the Spurs box. Free kick in a dangerous position. Everyone lines up on the edge of the six-yard box. Lukic attempts a cheeky surprise curler towards the bottom left, but doesn’t really connect properly and the ball’s hacked clear.

83 min: Kevin cuts in from the left and has a dig. The shot bobbles in front of Vicario, who smothers. We can also report that the home fans aren’t giving him grief any more.

82 min: Danso flings in long from the right. Bedlam on the edge of the six-yard box. Udogie has a shot. Blocked. The ball falls to Kolo Muani, who has his back to goal but tries to send a dragback into the bottom left. Inches wide! Top improv skills. What a goal that would have been.

Updated

80 min: Chukwueze’s first start in a Fulham shirt comes to an end. He’s replaced by Kevin.

79 min: Chukwueze whips a cross in from the left. Jimenez, diving at the far stick, can’t get anywhere near the ball with his head, so flings up both hands and pats it wide right! Into the book he goes.

77 min: Bergvall is replaced by Sarr.

75 min: Fulham have settled down since those changes. Spurs, having worked up a head of steam, are slowing a little.

73 min: Berge plays a defence-splitter down the middle for Sessegnon, who takes a poor touch wide left. That allows the Spurs defence to get back into position, and when Smith Rowe takes receipt of a cross, his attempted shot is immediately blocked. For a second, Spurs were wide open there.

71 min: Kudus backheels down the right for Bentancur, who crosses long. Odobert heads wide left at the far stick. Spurs getting closer and closer.

70 min: Fulham have had just one touch in the Tottenham box in this second half. It’s one-way traffic.

68 min: Also off: King and Wilson, the latter with a tight hamstring. They’re replaced by Lukic and Smith Rowe, the latter, formerly of Arsenal, arriving to the expected pantomime abuse. xPA all the way up to 11.

67 min: … so Fulham are relieved when Kudus is carelessly caught offside. Pressure off.

66 min: Kudus and Porro combine down the right yet again. The ball’s cut back for Simons, who sends a first-time flick goalwards from the penalty spot, only for Andersen to deflect wide right. Kudus whips the set piece to the near post. Bergvall eyebrows a header across goal, the ball heading for the top left … but Jimenez heads off the line and away! Spurs so close to an equaliser! Such a shift in momentum.

Updated

64 min: Tottenham are now winning a lot more of their duels. Kolo Muani nearly bursts down the middle, but the flag pops up for offside. Both home team and fans revitalised.

62 min: Tottenham kept probing down the right wing, and finally got their reward. The home crowd are on the march for the first time this evening. As for the Fulham fans … “When you’ve only got one point away all season, that glass we’re filling seems to have a large hole in the bottom,” sighs Richard Hirst.

61 min: That’s a belter of a goal, and it’s completely transformed the mood in the stadium. Meanwhile Thomas Frank completely transforms the make-up of his team, sending on Odobert, Simons and Bentancur for Richarlison, Gray and Palhinha.

GOAL! Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Fulham (Kudus 59)

This is much better from Spurs! Bergvall clips a cute reverse pass down the inside-right channel for Kudus, who chests down on the right-hand edge of the box and lashes an outrageous left-footed shot into the top right! Leno with no chance at his near post!

Updated

58 min: Porro again from the right. Andersen kicks the ball up onto his own chest and out for another corner. Spurs chance their arm by claiming for a penalty but there’s nothing in that. And nothing coming as a result of the corner either. This is much better from Spurs.

57 min: Porro crosses again from the right. Low. Kolo Muani stoops to meet it, heading inches wide of the right-hand post and rippling the side netting. Leno wasn’t getting to that.

56 min: Kudus wins another corner down the right. He takes it himself. Short. He gets the ball back … then hoicks it straight out for a goal kick. More frustration spills down from the stands.

54 min: Bassey and Richarlison have handfuls of each other’s shirt as they tussle down the Spurs right. The striker goes over, but Spurs don’t get a free kick. The home crowd are furious. Nearly doubly so when King threatens to break clear into the Spurs box down the left on the counter, but Danso gets in the way to put a stop to his gallop.

52 min: Porro wins a corner down the right. Kudus curls it towards the near post. Leno claws it out of the top-right corner and away. That’s better from Spurs. Kudus and Porro have been relentless down the right flank tonight, albeit in the futile style. But it’s probably Tottenham’s most likely route to success.

50 min: Wilson romps into space down the right but as he considers his options in the middle, the flag pops up for offside. That very early snapshot from Kolo Muani aside, Spurs have shown nothing since the restart. The irritated mutterings from the home fans emphasise that.

48 min: Udogie takes a poor touch and stretches for the ball. He clatters into Tete and is booked for reckless behaviour.

47 min: Vicario’s unwise bowl out nearly puts Udogie and Bergvall in trouble. The latter wins a soft free kick to release the pressure.

45 min 20 secs. Porro crosses from the right. Bassey chests. The ball sits up for Kolo Muani, who blasts straight back into the defender’s midriff. That’s the first time a Spurs player has got on the end of a cross tonight, albeit indirectly. That’s their first effort on target, as well.

Spurs get the second half underway. Quite a few boos as they do so. No changes. Yet.

That wild shot from Micky van de Ven on the stroke of half-time appears to have whistled Tottenham’s xG all the way to the heady heights of 0.07. So onwards and upwards for the hosts, who congregated on the pitch before heading off down the tunnel together, soaking up the boos. Defiance? Repentance? Self-flagellation? You decide. Let’s see if they’ve got any response.

Half-time postbag. “An individual error from Bergvall to not cut it out followed by a deflected shot, and then a truly ridiculous failure from the defenders and especially Vicario to allow that to happen for the second. Vicario is an excellent shot stopper but he has such a rash disposition sometimes which leads to mistakes like those. Say whatever you like about Thomas Frank, but the players have let him down today. They let him down at PSG as well, with a handful of mistakes and failures to close Vitinha down leading to another defeat. A true shambles” – Alexandra Ashton

“I’ve been wondering about Thomas Frank. His tenure as manager of Brøndby in Denmark was basically okay, but nothing special. After that, he goes to Brentford as an assistant coach and gets promoted from within. He does well, but after he left, there hasn’t been a noticeable drop-off. My inclination is to give him credit for leaving things in good order for his successor, but perhaps he was simply a competent executive in a well-run company. Last season, Tottenham were a team that could either attack well or defend well, but never both in the same match. Thomas Frank’s attempts at solving that has left Spurs a team that can do neither. He should be given time, but perhaps he needs to be at a better run club to do good work” – Kári Tulinius

“Keep Frank and sack the team. Can’t even watch this anymore” – Nick Wayne

HALF TIME: Tottenham Hotspur 0-2 Fulham

Spurs are booed off. An unambiguous volume.

Updated

45 min +3: … and to belabour the point, after Porro wins a corner down the right, Kudus sends the set piece straight out for a goal kick.

45 min +2: Kudus crosses twice from the right. Andersen heads clear on both occasions. Kudus has kept going, showing time and again; it’s just his final ball that’s been lacking.

45 min: From 25 yards out, Van de Ven larrups a shot 25 yards over. Let whoever’s working out the xG have some fun with that. There will be three additional first-half minutes.

44 min: Tottenham’s xG is now down to 0.01. Has 0.01 of a goal been deducted for lack of artistic merit?

43 min: Kudus gifts King the ball, and Spurs are very lucky the Fulham man slaps a pass intended for Chukwueze straight at Porro. Had he found his team-mate, Fulham were away down the left.

41 min: Tete upends Kolo Muani, 35 yards from his own goal. Everyone lines up on the edge of the Fulham box in anticipation of the free kick … but Porro’s delivery fails to beat the first man, and seconds later the ball’s back at Vicario’s feet. The keeper clears, to more ironic celebration. That might have been the Fulham fans, to be fair.

39 min: Nothing comes of the resulting corner. More muttering.

38 min: Chukwueze drops a shoulder to make space down the left and crosses. Jimenez prepares to power a header home, but Van de Ven, so often Tottenham’s saviour, gets in the road to divert out for a corner. That’s saved a certain goal.

36 min: King and Wilson take turns to juggle their way down the inside right, but just before the latter can shoot from the edge of the D, Udogie comes across to powerfully brush him off the ball. For a second there, the home fans were audibly fearing the worst.

35 min: Udogie has space to run into down the left, with options in the middle, but he’s mistimed his run and the flag pops up for offside. Spurs have at least stemmed the tide. It’s not much, but small acorns and all that.

33 min: On the touchline, Thomas Frank looks troubled. Head hung low, deep in thought. He needs to come up with something quicksmart.

31 min: Tottenham’s xG is currently 0.02. They’re making a habit of this.

29 min: A free kick for Spurs just inside the Fulham half. Everyone lines up on the edge of the box. Kudus swings it into the mixer. Andersen is nudged over by Van de Ven. A garden-variety foul. The whistle goes, and Van de Ven isn’t happy with the manner in which Andersen has gone to ground. He leans over his man in the Keane-Haaland style, and things momentarily threaten to kick off. It calms down quickly, and Van de Ven earns a booking for his aggression.

27 min: There’s a quick VAR check for a possible penalty, as Chukwueze went over as a result of Van de Ven’s arrival, but there’s nothing doing. It was a brilliant challenge.

26 min: … and as for their defence, oh dear. Porro tries to usher a long ball back to Vicario. It’s never getting there. Chukwueze nips in and rounds Vicario on the right. He’s about to roll into the empty net when Van de Ven arrives out of nowhere and telescopes a leg to block and clear. What an intervention! So close to a third for Fulham again. Spurs are a complete shambles.

Updated

25 min: Gray buys a ticket to the raffle from 25 yards. The ball bounces harmlessly wide left. That’s about as good as it’s got for Spurs as an attacking force.

24 min: King knocks the ball past Kudus and is shoved over from behind for his trouble. No booking, possibly because King was heading back towards his own goal. The referee has been kind so far.

22 min: … and Leno to punch clear. But Spurs come again, Kudus looping in a cross from the right. Bassey mistimes his jump at the near post, and the ball spins off an unsuspecting Andersen and over the bar. That could easily have flown into the net. Nothing comes of the resulting corner.

21 min: Richarlison races after a long pass down the right and wins Tottenham their first corner of the evening. That’s met with some more ironic cheering. Kudus to take …

19 min: Bergvall, who has a cheeky challenge in him, catches Andersen late as the Fulham captain passes out from the back. It should be a booking. The referee makes do with a lecture.

17 min: Fulham are first to everything in midfield. Spurs have been abysmal from front to back. Meanwhile here’s some more Drinking Vessel Liquid-to-Air Ratio Analysis from Richard Hirst: “Not that I’m ungrateful for the two early goals but how many 2-0 leads were lost today!”

15 min: Sessegnon barrels down the left and crosses long for Wilson, who is totally free down the inside-right channel! Wilson rolls across to Jimenez, who rolls home, but the flag pops up for offside. Sessegnon had needlessly gone early. Spurs get away with one. The home fans are beyond restless.

14 min: Wilson, just inside the Spurs box, has a shot blocked. Sessegnon curls the rebound in from the left. King competes but handballs. Spurs are all over the shop at the back, and a third Fulham goal looks much more likely than a momentum shifter for Spurs.

12 min: Another long ball down the Fulham right. Wilson hares after it. Vicario comes out and this time does what he should have done earlier, blootering the ball deep into the stand. Ironic cheers greet the clearance. The poor guy looks utterly shell-shocked.

11 min: More incredulous gasps from the home supporters as Iwobi barges his way down the left and enters the box. Van de Van extends a leg to deflect out for a corner. Vicario, under so much pressure from his own fans, punches clear to the edge of the box. Chukwueze is given too much time on the edge of the D, and curls a shot across the keeper and off the outside of the left-hand post. Goal kick. So close to a third for Fulham. The keeper wasn’t getting to that had it been on target.

9 min: Two minutes and 16 seconds between Fulham’s opener and that defensive fiasco. Such a cool, well-executed finish by Wilson, though, who sized up the situation and took full advantage.

8 min: That was an astonishing howler by the keeper, and he’s getting pelters from his own supporters as a result. The powder keg of frustration well and truly lit.

GOAL! Tottenham Hotspur 0-2 Fulham (Wilson 6)

Vicario comes out of his box to deal with a pass down the Fulham right and, instead of clearing into the stand, slaps a pass back upfield. Straight to King, who feeds Wilson on the touchline. With Vicario out of position, Wilson sweeps a first-time curler into the unguarded net! Boos ring around the stadium. What a disaster for Spurs!

Tottenham Hotspur's keeper Guglielmo Vicario looks dejected after Fulham's Harry Wilson scores their second goal from out on the touchline.

Updated

5 min: That’ll test the resolve of both Tottenham’s players and fans. It’s not been the happiest ground. And …

GOAL! Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Fulham (Tete 4)

We do have an early goal, though! Chukwueze, making his first start for Fulham tonight, jigs in from the left. His pass across the face of the box looks misplaced, but somehow gets all the way through to Tete, who takes a touch and drives for goal. His low shot takes a flick off Udogie and into the bottom-right corner, foxing the wrong-footed Vicario. What a start for the away side!

Updated

2 min: The first groan of the evening isn’t long in coming, though, as Van de Ven slices a simple pass into the stands on 98 seconds.

55 seconds: No.

Fulham kick off. Earlier today, Phil Foden scored the fastest goal of the season after 59 seconds for Manchester City against Leeds … only for Newcastle’s Malick Thiaw to beat that mark by four seconds against Everton a couple of hours later. Something’s clearly in the air today, so can anyone better that here?

The teams are out! Spurs in white, Fulham in third-choice black. It’s a nippy autumnal night. We’ll be off in a minute or two.

Updated

Thomas Frank speaks to Sky Sports … “We need to come out with energy and intensity … really put that into the game on and off the ball … the rest will take care of itself.”

… as does Marco Silva. “It is a competition between all the wingers we have … [Samuel Chukwueze] has been knocking at the door … we need the right decisions from all of our players in attack.”

Pre-match predictions / Drinking Vessel Liquid-to-Air Ratio Analysis. “Sterling work re. preamble; by stating the bleeding obvious, that this has got stinker written all over it, we will now of course be treated to a goal-buster of epic proportions. And if not, can’t say we weren’t warned, eh? Lovely stuff, can’t wait” – Dave Estherby

“The Fulham fan (ie. me) says: ‘This is Spurs, they are rubbish at home, we might actually do something away. Ah no, we’re Fulham after all, this is when Spurs find their home form.’ The Spurs fan says: ‘This is Fulham, they are rubbish away, we might actually do something at home. Ah no, we’re Spurs after all, this is when Fulham find their away form.’ The neutral says: ‘One team’s rubbish at home, the other’s rubbish away, this is going to be a crap game.’ No prizes for guessing who’s going to be right” – Richard Hirst

Newcastle have just won 4-1 at Everton; Rob Smyth has the details of that rout. Everton’s failure to take at least a point means Spurs remain in the top half of the table going into tonight’s match, though they’ve been nudged down into 10th by Brentford’s earlier 3-1 victory over Burnley. Fulham remain where they started the day, in 15th position. That’s where they’ll stay whatever happens tonight, but Spurs can go fifth with a win, seventh with a draw.

To Be Fair dept. While the preamble suggests both teams will go into battle tonight more in hope than expectation, there are scraps of comfort to be had. Fulham are coming off the back of that aforementioned win over Sunderland, and that was their second Premier League victory in three games. They’ve also won two of their last three Premier League games against Spurs, drawing the other. Spurs meanwhile can take succour from a far better performance against PSG than the no-show at Arsenal, and the fact they’ve outperformed their xG (11.2) by nearly nine goals (20) this season. Admittedly that stat isn’t quite as impressive when you take into account some of their absurdly low xG totals – 0.1 against Chelsea and 0.07 against Arsenal are the two lowest totals of any club so far this season – but when things aren’t clicking, you take whichever positives are on offer, no matter how small.

Tottenham make four changes to the side that started the 5-3 Champions League defeat at Paris Saint-Germain. Kevin Danso, João Palhinha, Destiny Udogie and Mohammed Kudus come in for Djed Spence, Pape Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur, who drop to the bench, and captain Cristian Romero, who misses out altogether through suspension.

Fulham make one change to their starting XI following their 1-0 home win over Sunderland. Samuel Chukwueze replaces Kevin in attack.
