Tottenham tweet from 2012 comes back to haunt club after Newcastle put SIX past them

Tottenham's official Twitter account rubbed salt into the team's wounds after a historical tweet emerged during their humiliation at Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

Cristian Stellini's sluggish side were hammered 6-1 at St James' Park, with Newcastle scoring FIVE GOALS during a sensational opening 21 minutes. The emphatic result leaves Spurs six points behind Manchester United in fourth having played two games more.

Tottenham fans were left in shock when Alexander Isak scored Newcastle's fifth goal, and their misery was compounded when rival supporters dug out a tweet from February 2012. It read: "Apologies for any inconvenience and disappointment this may cause."

Fans took advantage of Tottenham's historical post during Sunday afternoon's game by quote-tweeting it, with one describing it as "evergreen". "That first half summed up," wrote another fan, while one advised added: "Just pin the tweet at this point, lads."

Rival fans also enjoyed Tottenham's live tweeting of Sunday afternoon's game. "Banter club," wrote one supporter, but not everyone found the funny side of the tweets. Thousands of Tottenham fans called for chair Daniel Levy to step down after a difficult campaign.

Tottenham went into the season full of confidence after beating rivals Arsenal to a Champions League spot at the end of the 2021/22 term and making a number of impressive signings in the summer - including Richarlison, Ivan Perisic and Yves Bissouma.

Yet their season hasn't gone to plan. Spurs failed to go far in the Carabao Cup, FA Cup or Champions League, with manager Antonio Conte leaving his position a month ago. He was replaced by his assistant Stellini on an acting basis, but that hasn't improved results.

Tottenham suffered an embarrassing 3-2 home defeat to relegation candidates Bournemouth last weekend and followed that up with a woeful display at St James' Park. Their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League now look very slim.

"It could be seven or it could be eight, they’ve been that at it," former Newcastle midfielder Keiron Dyer told Sky Sports at half-time. "It’s just a shame Spurs have been so poor. They’ve let the fans down, they’ve let everyone associated with the club down and it took half an hour for them to change to a five at the back, but the game’s over then."

Former Tottenham defender Danny Rose added: "Jamie [Redknapp] told me you have to have the right personnel to play a back four so I was wrong there. There’s been so many mistakes and all I’ve been thinking all first half is how am I unemployed?

"To be 5-0 down after 20 minutes is unheard of for a club that are supposedly a massive club."

After Newcastle's fifth goal on Sunday afternoon, Sky Sports commentator Alan Smith said: "It is difficult to believe what we’re seeing... My word, there aren’t many games that pan out like this, I cannot remember one between two teams so close in the league and one so totally outclassed. It’s incredible to watch."
