Tottenham told to make Weston McKennie transfer move after World Cup masterclass vs England

Tottenham fans will have been keeping a watchful eye on United States midfielder Weston McKennie in their World Cup clash vs England on Friday evening. Starting regularly for Juventus this season, talk of a switch to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium just doesn't seem to go away at all.

A player who Fabio Paratici is a big fan of after initially bringing him to Juventus from German side Schalke in 2020, the 24-year-old has been linked with a move to the Lilywhites ever since the Tottenham managing director of football departed Turin. Impressing in midfield for the US in the 0-0 draw with the Three Lions, Brad Friedel has called on his former club to move for McKennie if they can afford to do so.

"If the finances work then Tottenham should definitely be in for McKennie. He’s the best central midfielder the US has ever had," the former shot-stopper told Online Casino. "Against England he showed his quality and I think he’d be a brilliant addition for any big side in Europe."

McKennie and his midfield partners made life incredibly difficult for Gareth Southgate's side in their goalless draw at the Al Bayt Stadium, with their energy and relentless work limiting what the England team could do on the ball. Friedel believes that McKennie's switch to the right "confused the England players" and that Gregg Berhalter's formation choice worked wonders.

"I think Gareth Southgate was being honest in his post-match interview and it was refreshing to see," added the ex-Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper. "Berhalter got his formation spot on and England didn’t predict it so he has to get a lot of credit for that.

"I texted him after the game and said ‘great job’ as playing that formation was start and putting Weston McKennie on the right really confused the England players. He’s never played there before and playing a rigid 4-4-2 formation really worked well.

"I understand that England fans get frustrated but Southgate was only being honest in his interview and perhaps the US aren’t getting enough credit for their display."
