Tottenham midfielder Eveliina Summanen could face a two-match ban after she was charged by the FA for "successful deception of a match official".
The charge came after Summanen's involvement in Sunday's incident with England and Man Utd midfielder Ella Toone, that saw the United player shown a red card following an altercation on the ground. Summanen went down clutching her face despite minimal contact but Toone was sent off with ten minutes left to play.
United, who were leading 2-1 at the time of the incident, held on for a precious win to send them back to the top of the WSL. Toone's red card was also overturned on Wednesday afternoon, meaning she will now be available for United's next three domestic fixtures.
But the FA have now confirmed they are charging Summanen. A statement posted via FA Spokesperson read: "Tottenham Hotspur Women's Eveliina Summanen has been charged with 'successful deception of a match official' following their WSL match against Manchester United on Sunday 12 February.
"It's alleged the midfielder committed a clear act of simulation during the 80th minute, which led to an opponent being sent off and therefore her behaviour amounts to improper conduct."
The incident could lead to Summanen receiving a two-match ban if the charges are upheld by the FA's three-person panel. This would see her miss the FA Cup tie with Reading and an away trip to Man City on March 5 in the WSL.
With ten minutes left to play Toone appeared to hit out at Summanen during a scramble on the ground, leading to a straight red card. However, Summanen did appear to make the most of minimal contact and United manager Marc Skinner said after the game he felt that Toone had been the victim of "play acting."
The United manager immiedtaely stated after the game he would be appealing the red card, while his Tottenham counterpart Rehanne Skinner said she would leave incidents like this to the officials.
Following the game on Sunday, Toone took to twitter to give her take on the incident.
"Pride myself on the passion and love I have when playing for this club. Hold my hands up for my reaction and I’ll learn from it. Proud of the team," she said.
