Tottenham's Djed Spence transfer stance set to help Chelsea amid Pedro Porro talks

Tottenham could be strengthening Chelsea this window as they look to complete their own perfect transfers. Having only signed Arnaut Danjuma with less than a week until deadline day there is still plenty of work to be done.

Antonio Conte is desperate to bring in a new right wing-back but also wants to offload one too. football.london understands that it is youngster Djed Spence most likely to be on the way out. The 22-year-old has had his growth stunted significantly since moving from Middlesbrough in the summer.

He has played less than one half of football and has only made the bench on 12 occasions in the league this season. When he came in it was with the expectation that he could go on to be one of the best in his position over time. Although it's still too soon to judge him there has been little to back that hype up.

Now, with Conte looking at Pedro Porro as a late January signing - the 23-year-old is rated as one of Europe's top defenders - he will need to shed some of his squad. Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal are the current players in that spot but Ivan Perisic has also filled in regularly.

Porro would make that four players on the right without including Spence. That's why the decision has been made to allow him to leave on loan for the rest of the campaign. With his clear quality, as shown for England's youth sides as well as on loan at Nottingham Forest in the Championship last season, Spence is extremely highly-rated still.

The only issue for Spurs is that initial interest in him would make Chelsea stronger. According to the Daily Mail, it is French side Lyon that have expressed their interest in him. This alone doesn't help Spurs' London rivals but it opens the door for 19-year-old Malo Gusto to leave this month.

Chelsea themselves are looking at right-sided defenders and had sounded out Porro before attention turned towards Gusto. The Frenchman has agreed personal terms and is now waiting for the two clubs to agree a fee - believed to be in the region of £30m.

If this goes through and Spence is the replacement that allows him to leave then it may well be a small blow to Spurs to see their top four rivals improving this window.
