Tottenham rocked by Arsenal transfer interest amid lingering £27m question

Tottenham could be set to sell Dutch international winger Steven Bergwijn to Premier League top four rivals Arsenal this summer, according to an eye-opening report.

The Gunners are said to have shown an interest in signing Bergwijn from Spurs ahead of next season, with the 24-year-old’s future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium looking doubtful after another underwhelming season.

And despite the bitter hostilities between the two clubs, there remains a chance that a deal could be struck for Antonio Conte ’s player to switch allegiances in North London and complete a move to the Emirates Stadium in search of a career kickstart.

A report from Calciomercato states that Serie A side AC Milan are also interested in signing Bergwijn from Spurs this summer and could get him for as little as £15m, which is nearly half of what his move from PSV Eindhoven cost.

But Daniel Levy and co are said to be willing to listen to offers for the 24-year-old, who has had somewhat of a mini resurgence under Antonio Conte, producing two moments of brilliance to help his side come from 2-1 down to win 3-2 at Leicester City in added time back in January.

However, an uninspired return of three goals in 23 appearances this season has hardly earned him a place in the squad ahead of the next campaign and his days look set to be numbered at the club, despite high praise from Conte this season.

Nonetheless, AC Milan are keen, but so are Arsenal if the report is true, and a move to Mikel Arteta’s side would seem like the most unlikely of scenarios given the rivalry between the two sides, as well as the fact that Spurs won’t want to sell to a top four rival.

Son Heung-min has been a key figure in the Tottenham side in recent seasons, while the instant impact of Dejan Kulusevski following his arrival from Juventus on deadline day in January has pushed Bergwijn down the pecking order.

Lucas Moura is also favoured over the Dutchman and a departure this summer is certainly a strong possibility, but the chances of him leaving for the Gunners have to be incredibly slim.

However, William Gallas has made the switch between the two clubs before - following the expiry of his Arsenal contract - while Emmanuel Adebayor also pulled on the shirt for both clubs.

It is hard to see Steven Bergwijn’s name being added to that list, although Spurs could be tempted should the Gunners cough up the right price for the former PSV wideman, and stranger things have happened in football.

Bergwijn is sure to fight for his place in Conte’s squad for the remainder of the season but whether or not he can prove his worth to remain at the club beyond this campaign is another question, as a summer departure begins to look ever more likely.
