Tottenham are assessing their midfield options for the January transfer window, with Rodrigo Bentancur set for a long spell out with his hamstring injury.

Bentancur suffered a hamstring injury at Bournemouth last week and reports in his native Uruguay say he requires surgery and could be out for up to three months.

Spurs are yet to comment but his injury leaves them short of options in midfield.

They have been linked with a move for Conor Gallagher, who is searching for regular football ahead of the World Cup and could leave Atletico Madrid this month.

The severity of Lucas Bergvall’s muscular injury remains unclear, while Pape Sarr is still at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Thomas Frank will soon have Yves Bissouma back from AFCON but he has not played all season and Spurs are looking at reinforcements in the middle of the park.

Without Bentancur or Bergvall in the squad, Frank did not bring on a midfielder during Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the FA Cup.

Frank admitted in his post-match press conference that his squad’s lack of depth had influenced the lateness of his substitutions, after he waited until the 78th minute to make his first unenforced change.

"Yeah. Basically, that was it,” he said. “I don't think we, for whatever reason, had the depth in the bench today. We basically didn't have a midfielder to replace Archie and Joao. So I had a few solutions in my head, if we had to lose one of them. We fortunately didn't. So that was part of it, yeah.”

Frank has said Spurs will be active in the January transfer window, with the club looking to bring in cover at left-back and on the wing to try to bolster their squad as injuries pile up.

Spurs are close to sealing a £13million deal for Santos left-back Souza, and the 19-year-old is due to undergo a medical in the coming days after the two clubs agreed a deal last week.

Spurs also remain in the market for a winger, with Mohammed Kudus ruled out until April with a quad injury and Brennan Johnson leaving for Crystal Palace.
