Tottenham player ratings vs Nottingham Forest: Dejan Kulusevski biggest threat; Heung-min Son below par again

Tottenham continued their fine start to the season with a 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest, sealed by Harry Kane’s double.

In between his goals, the England captain had a penalty saved by Dean Henderson after Steve Cook’s crazy handball.

Spurs were outplayed for long periods by a gusty Forest side but held firm to go joint-second in the Premier League.

Dan Kilpatrick was at the City Ground to rate the Spurs players...

Hugo Lloris 7

Rushed off his line to beat Jesse Lingard to a teasing cross and saved well from Lewis O’Brien’s long-range effort.

Davinson Sanchez 7

Often in the right place to clear, but Spurs dearly missed Cristian Romero’s ability to play out from the back, with the Colombian panicky in possession.

Eric Dier 7

Dived in on the halfway line, leading to one of Forest’s best chances of the first half and did not look entirely comfortable with the hosts’ press. But still did his part defensively, as Spurs kept a clean sheet.

Ben Davies 7

Did well on the rare occasions he was able to step out of defence but part of a back line which struggled to build from the back, leaving Spurs facing waves of attacks.

Emerson Royal 5

Loose in possession and offered little threat in the final third. Time for Matt Doherty or Djed Spence to have a go?

Rodrigo Bentancur 6

The base from which many of Spurs’ counters were launched but would probably be more effective in a side that has the lion’s share of possession.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg 7

Battled well and created a chance for Kane with a defence-splitting pass. But can Spurs control possession in the Premier League with this midfield two?

Ivan Perisic 7

When he got forward, his delivery was excellent, notably for the cross for Cook’s handball. But he spent much of the game on the back foot, where his experience was important.

Dejan Kulusevski 8

Clever reverse pass for Kane’s goal when the easy option was to play in Perisic. The Swede was Spurs’ most creative player, and by far their biggest threat for most of the game.

Heung-min Son 5

Fired straight at Henderson in his best sight of goal in another below-par performance. He finished unconvincingly when one-on-one with the goalkeeper in the first half, but the flag was up anyway.

Harry Kane 8

Scored twice to reach more career milestones and make it four goals in as many games this season but missed a first spot-kick in 22 attempts with a tame effort. He’s finishing but, like Spurs, is not at his best. A promising sign?

Subs

Richarlison (Son 74’) 8

Made the game safe with a superb assist for Kane’s second goal, hunting down possession and crossing for the England captain with the outside of his boot.

Ryan Sessegnon (Perisic 74’) 6

Missed the chance to square to Kane just before his second goal but added energy down the left.

Yves Bissouma (Kulusevski 83’) N/A

Limited to another short cameo but surely time for him to start against West Ham on Wednesday.

Djed Spence (Bentancur 90’) N/A
