Tottenham player ratings vs Everton: Micky van de Ven incredible as Wilson Odobert lively on debut

Tottenham got their season up and running with a 4-0 thrashing of sorry Everton in north London.

Yves Bissouma’s outstanding strike – his first goal for the club – broke the deadlock and Heung-min Son pickpocketed Jordan Pickford to double the hosts' lead before half-time.

Cristian Romero marked his 100th Spurs appearance by heading home James Maddison’s corner to make it 3-0 and Son added a fourth after an incredible run by Micky van de Ven.

Here’s how we rated the Spurs players…

Guglielmo Vicario 7

Saved sharply from Jesper Lindstrom in the second half. A little hesitant at set pieces but did enough.

Pedro Porro 8

Nearly scored again with a curling left-foot strike. Defended superbly, standing up to Everton sub Iliman Ndiaye in the second half.

Cristian Romero 9

Marked his Spurs century with a well-taken goal. Tested Pickford with a fierce effort early on and was outstanding in possession, creating an opening for Maddison with a lovely pass. Had one hairy moment when playing out but also strong defensively.

Micky van de Ven 9

Dribbled from the edge of his own box to set up Son’s second and Spurs' fourth goal in what could easily be the assist of the season. Mopped up the majority of Everton counter-attacks with no fuss in a commanding defensive display.

Destiny Udogie 8

Quietly impressive again, getting forward well and linking up with debutant Wilson Odobert.

Yves Bissouma 8

Offered the perfect response to his one-game club ban with an outstanding strike to break the deadlock. Used the ball well, frequently switching play impressively, and swept up in front of the back four when needed.

Dejan Kulusevski 7

Made Bissouma’s goal was an excellent run across the face of the box. Worked tirelessly up and down the pitch at No8.

James Maddison 8

Full of beans again but will have been frustrated not to beat Pickford after racing clear of the defence from Romero’s pass. Made Romero’s goal with a corner, and fizzed a free-kick wide of the post.

Wilson Odobert 7

Lively on debut, offering Spurs pace and width down the left. His final ball was not quite there and Everton nearly punished a loose pass in the second half, when Vicario saved from Lindstrom.

Brennan Johnson 5

Got into some good positions but felt short of killer instinct, and was the quietest of Spurs’ forwards. Worked hard.

Heung-min Son 8

Put his slow start to the season at Leicester quickly behind him with a very encouraging display back at centre-forward. Got Spurs’ second goal with a superb piece of pressing and wrapped up a thumping win with a smart finish.

Subs

Richarlison (Odobert 66’) 7

Some nice touches, and a handful against his former club, including making a nuisance of himself in the box ahead of Romero’s goal.

Pape Matar Sarr (Kulusevski 66’) 6

Added energy to Spurs' midfield as they saw out a first win of the season.

Archie Gray (Bissouma 73’) 6

Another composed appearance from the bench for the teenager.

Djed Spence (Udogie 73’) 6

Put in a dangerous cross after overlapping Son.

Lucas Bergvall (Maddison 79’) 6

Some neat touches and clearly enjoys a tackle.
