The optimism from Tottenham’s sensational win over Manchester City quickly evaporated as they were beaten 1-0 by Burnley at Turf Moor.
In torrential rain, Ben Mee scored the game’s only goal, rising to head home a free-kick at the back post as Spurs suffered a fourth loss in five League games.
Dan Kilpatrick was at Turf Moor to rate the visiting players...
Rooted to his line for the Burnley goal when perhaps he might have come for the free-kick. Made a smart save from Jay Rodriguez.
Cristian Romero 6
A faultless performance of aggression and poise until he was outmuscled by Mee at the back post for the decisive moment. Felt harsh on the Argentine, who had earlier caught the eye as he roamed forward.
Eric Dier 7
Another solid display in front of the watching Gareth Southgate, although was beaten to a header by Jay Rodriguez which should have led to a second goal.
Ben Davies 6
Stood up well to the different threats posed by Aaron Lennon and Wout Weghorst. Forced a smart stop from Nick Pope.
Emerson Royal 5
Saw more of the ball in dangerous areas than anyone else while he was on the pitch, but could not make the most of it. Put in a couple of threatening crosses shortly before he was replaced.
Ryan Sessegnon 6
Two low crosses deserved someone on the end of them. The wing-back was hard working but looks too hesitant and unsure of himself at times.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg 6
Relished the battle but his performance was lacking substance, and he did little with the ball to help Spurs find a breakthrough.
Rodrigo Bentancur 6
Looked in discomfort after an early slip but played on until half-time. Coped well with Burnley’s press but no real memorable contributions.
Dejan Kulusevski 7
The Swede’s quick feet engineered some promising positions and he looked a big threat when he moved to right wing-back for the final 30 minutes. Has adapted to the Premier League with impressive speed.
Heung-min Son 4
A hesitant and disappointing display. Squandered a couple of good positions and rarely looked anywhere near his menacing best.
Harry Kane 7
Struck the bar with a header from Son’s free-kick and went close with a pot shot. Could not fault his effort on a night when Spurs fashioned few openings.
Subs
Harry Winks (Bentancur 46’) 6
Put some balls into dangerous areas and tried to make things happen.
Lucas Moura (Emerson 65’) 5
Few notable contributions as Burnley denied him space to operate.
Steven Bergwijn (Sessegnon 79’) 6
Threatened to produce another late show but his shot was straight at Pope.
