Conte admits January frustration

Conte has admitted that is was "not easy" to see the club struggle to secure their top targets in the January transfer window.

Although Spurs added Juventus duo Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski on the final day of the transfer window, the new manager was seemingly expecting more acquisitions.

Tottenham were linked with a move for Luis Diaz, although he eventually joined Liverpool from Porto.

"I glimpsed situations that could have developed, then when you enter the situation you understand that something anyway ... what happened in January is not easy," said Conte.

"Four players left in January. Four important players for Tottenham, two have arrived. So even numerically instead of strengthening you you may have, on paper, weakened."

Conte's message 'crystal clear'

The Daily Mirror's Chief Football Writer John Cross has taken a look at Tottenham's situation following Conte's candid comments.

The former Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan boss has never been a man to mince his words and even though he's early into the role at Spurs, it appears he is at ease bringing up some harsh truths in public.

"The message is crystal clear: Conte does not believe Tottenham can beat the likes of Manchester City and lowering expectation levels might just absolve him of blame and lay it firmly at the door of the club for their recruitment" said Cross.

"Conte has always been a political animal but one thing he has never been is a manager who is willing to stick around, build a long term project and a lasting dynasty."

City get injury boost ahead of Spurs

Manchester City's record signing Jack Grealish is in contention to feature against Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The England midfielder has not featured since February 9 against Brentford due to a shin issue. Grealish missed 12 games for Aston Villa last season with the same problem, prompting concern among some City supporters.

However, the issue doesn't appear to be as severe this time round and the £100 million man has reportedly not yet given up home of playing against Spurs.

Tottenham beat City 1-0 on home soil in their opening fixture of the 2021-22 season, a game in which Grealish made his City bow.
