Tottenham news: £27m star targeted as Spurs' thrashing of Leeds forces Marcelo Bielsa decision

Here is your Tottenham Hotspur morning digest for Monday, February 28.

Doherty's verdict

Tottenham defender Matt Doherty has opened up on his first goal for the club following the Lillywhites' 4-0 victory against Leeds United.

"We played well today," Doherty told Spurs TV. "I think everybody played with personality, character and confidence. We kind of blew them away.

"We were expecting a reaction from them after what happened to them during the week [losing 6-0 to Liverpool] and they're at home, early kick-off, the atmosphere.

"I think we nullified them quite well and we were ruthless today."

He added: "It's my first goal for Tottenham, it's taken a long time, but it feels pretty good."

Bielsa decision

The aforementioned loss to Spurs proved to be Marcelo Bielsa's last as Leeds boss, with the Argentine controversially sacked on Sunday.

A statement from the Yorkshire-based club read: "Leeds United can today confirm the club have parted company with head coach Marcelo Bielsa.

"The 66-year-old was in charge of the team for over three-and-a-half years, having taken the reins in June 2018."

Leeds United chairman Andrea Radrizzani added: "This has been the toughest decision I have had to make during my tenure at Leeds United, taking into account all the success Marcelo has had at the club."

Botman targeted

According to The Daily Star, Spurs boss Antonio Conte has set his sights on Lille centre-half Sven Botman, who is valued at £27million on Transfermarkt.

The Dutchman was linked with a move to Newcastle United during the January transfer window but eventually decided to stay with the reigning Ligue 1 champions.

Now, the aforementioned report claims that Conte is keen to bring Botman to N17 to improve his backline in the summer window and the club's hierarchy are desperate to back the Italian coach in fear of him leaving.
