Tottenham manager news: Vincent Kompany addresses links with Spurs job after Burnley promotion

Vincent Kompany had little interest in discussing his future when quizzed on reports linking him with the Tottenham job.

The Belgian took charge of Burnley last summer and has had an immediate impact at Turf Moor, with the Clarets 14 points clear at the top of Championship and securing promotion straight back to the Premier League with time to spare.

It’s no surprise then that Kompany is already attracting interest from elsewhere, with reports this week suggesting Spurs see him as a top target as they search for a permanent replacement for Antonio Conte.

Cristian Stellini, assistant under Conte, is in charge at Tottenham until the summer, and he faces a battle to secure Champions League football for whoever is in the Spurs dugout next season. The club sit fifth in the table, three points behind Manchester United and Newcastle having played a game more.

But Kompany, the four-time Premier League winner, insisted in a press conference on Thursday that he was happy at Burnley, and that his full focus was on the final six games of the season rather than the situation at other clubs.

“I don’t waste answers on my future,” Kompany told reporters.

“I said it day one of my job here at Burnley, in anticipation that one day there might be a question like this. So, crack on. I’m focusing on Reading and the next games.

“It’s the reason I chose Burnley. I chose for people and I feel in that I made the right decision. It’s an enviable place to work in, trust me, especially when we keep talking about managers getting sacked left, right and centre.”

He added: “Wherever I am, in my head, it’s always the biggest job in the world. Always.”
