Tottenham linked with Joe Gomez transfer as defender considers Liverpool future

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly identified Joe Gomez as a transfer target this summer and remain interested in his services as he seeks a move away from Liverpool.

A report from 90min reveals that a number of Premier League clubs are after the services of the 24-year-old but Spurs remain one of the few who have shown the most interest.

Spurs have had a number of defensive struggles this season and will look to amend those with the recruitment of some higher class players this summer, as they aim to be more competitive next campaign.

And Gomez is seen as a player who fits the bill, while the club will fancy their chances of signing a player who is desperate for regular first team action.

The centre back is desperate to be a part of England ’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year and knows he will not be able to do that should he remain at Liverpool, meaning a move to Spurs could be on the cards.

Antonio Conte has opted to use a back three this season, with Eric Dier, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies most commonly taking those positions.

Dier and Romero have impressed the most but Davies is traditionally a left back, although the lack of faith shown in Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon by Conte is a reason for the Welshman’s consistent involvement.

Nonetheless, Gomez would be a welcome addition to the north London club’s backline as they look to rebuild under the Italian coach.

The 24-year-old has developed immensely while at Anfield and has made 135 appearances in all competitions for the Reds since joining them from Charlton Athletic in 2015.

That included 28 appearances in 2019-20 as Liverpool won the Premier League, but recurring injuries limited him to just seven league appearances last season and a further five in the current campaign.

To add to that, following the impressive form of Joel Matip and the summer signing of Ibrahima Konate, Gomez has seen himself fall down the pecking order on Merseyside and now finds himself as fourth choice centre-back.

And with that looking unlikely to change for the remainder of the season and the next campaign, Gomez is seeking a move away from Jurgen Klopp’s side to find regular first team football.

But the 24-year-old still has two years left on his current deal at Anfield and will therefore not come cheaply, with the Reds more than likely set to hold out for a decent fee.

The recently-crowned Carabao Cup champions are not looking to lose Gomez, but should Spurs offer a deal too good to turn down, they could be tempted to accept.

And with Gomez having his sights set on being part of England’s upcoming World Cup squad, he could contemplate a move in search of regular playing time.
