Tottenham Hotspur confirms Ange Postecoglou as its new manager

Ange Postecoglou will become the first Australian coach to manage in the Premier League after confirming a move to Tottenham Hotspur on a four-year deal.

Postecoglou leaves Scottish champions Celtic after a trophy-laden stint in Glasgow over the past two seasons.

Tottenham has been hunting for a permanent replacement for Antonio Conte since sacking the Italian in March, with Cristian Stellini and then Ryan Mason taking the reins temporarily.

Spurs, who pride themselves on playing attacking football, have resorted to some turgid, defensive play under Conte and Jose Mourinho in recent years.

That is unlikely to be a concern under Postecoglou, who prides himself on an expansive, attractive game and has made a habit of revitalising struggling clubs.

“Ange brings a positive mentality and a fast, attacking style of play,”  Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said.

“He has a strong track record of developing players and an understanding of the importance of the link from the academy – everything that is important to our club.

“We are excited to have Ange join us as we prepare for the season ahead.”

Postecoglou has won five domestic trophies of a possible six after arriving from Yokohama F Marinos in 2021 and was linked with numerous Premier League clubs throughout this season.

His only experience in Europe before joining Celtic in 2021 had been a spell in charge of Greek lower league side Panachaiki in 2008.

The Greek-born coach has won the A-League title with South Melbourne and Brisbane Roar, Japan’s top flight with Yokohama and led Australia to victory at the 2015 Asian Cup.

Postecoglou became a hero with the Celtic support, not just for resuming their success after a barren season, but also for implementing an attacking style of play and his connection with the fans.
