Tottenham hold key advantage in Victor Osimhen transfer race after £51m Arsenal bid rejected

Tottenham have been in the market for a new striker for what feels like years. There has been an over-reliance on Harry Kane since he broke into the first team picture in 2013/14 and never looked back.

Finding a worthy back-up striker, one who can both find the back of the net and be satisfied sitting on the bench for long periods, knowing that Kane is the main man, has proved very tricky indeed. The likes of Vincent Janssen, Fernando Llorente and Carlos Vinicius have all come and gone and the weight remains firmly on Kane's shoulders.

Head coach Antonio Conte is trying to fix that this summer and plenty of names have been linked with a move to N17. Richarlison has been heavily linked in recent days, with Tottenham's Harry Winks a potential makeweight in a deal with Everton. Lautaro Martinez is also being linked with a £77million move to team up with Conte once more.

football.london understands another striker on Spurs' radar is 23-year-old Napoli forward Victor Osimhen, who netted 18 goals and provided a further six assists in 31 matches for Napoli this season. Tottenham considered the Nigerian back when he was in Ligue 1 in Lille and he would now come with a big fee after impressing in Italy.

Speaking to CalcioMercato, the Nigerian international broke his silence on his future when he said: “I know there are many people that would like me in Spain or England, but I don't think it's the right time to talk about it now that I'm with the national team. I always go out on the pitch to do my best both with the national team and with my club.

“I don't know my future, I know anything can happen, but now I just want to go on holiday with my family, clear my head and recharge my batteries. Then we'll take care of everything else.”

Napoli are thought to want around £85million for their in-demand striker and that could put Fabio Paratici and Tottenham off. Arsenal had a bid of £51million rejected out of hand by Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis, but Spurs would hold a massive advantage over fierce rivals Arsenal when it came to getting Osimhen to sign on the dotted line.

According to Italian journalist Lorenzo Amuso, as per Sport Witness, the lure of Champions League football would be key for Spurs in any negotiations. He said: "Conte, thanks to the Champions League qualification, has obtained great guarantees on the transfer market, so we can expect really great things from Tottenham. Among the names, there is Osimhen of Napoli. Tottenham is not the only club that has taken an interest. Arsenal have already presented a €60million offer, rejected by De Laurentiis."
