Tottenham fans believe Ryan Sessegnon has dropped Djed Spence transfer hint with cryptic message

Tottenham fans believe they have spotted Ryan Sessegnon calling on Middlesbrough wing-back Djed Spence to join him at the north London club on social media.

Spurs are looking to bolster their homegrown ranks and would like to sign 21-year-old Spence this summer following a fine season on loan at Nottingham Forest, in which he helped Steve Cooper's side earn promotion to the Premier League. The right wing-back is believed to be keen on a move to Tottenham but the two clubs have not yet been able to agree on a fee.

Spence posted a two-minute highlights compilation on Instagram on Monday evening from his promotion-winning season at Forest, with the caption "Season 21/22. Unforgettable memories." However, it was the reply from his England U21 team-mate Sessegnon underneath that got the Spurs fans talking.

The left wing-back, who enjoyed his own breakthrough at Tottenham last season, left three flame emojis in response with the cryptic reply: "You know what to do now."

That provoked a string of responses from Spurs fans calling him 'Agent Sess', assuming the 22-year-old was calling on Spence to join him in N17. Sessegnon could of course have simply been suggesting that his international team-mate now knew how to kick on his career after a season spent learning in the last campaign.

Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder expects Tottenham to eventually sign Spence this summer even if there has been little progress in recent weeks.

"Hopefully, it will come to a quick conclusion because that would help everybody," Wilder said at the weekend, as reported by The Northern Echo. "That's the way we'd like it to be, although the situation isn't always straightforward. It is taking its time, but hopefully, it can get sorted. If not, then as I've said all along, Djed comes back to us."

The Boro boss had said last week: "From my point of view, negotiations between Kieran (Scott), Neil (Bausor), Steve (Gibson) and Tottenham stay between Kieran, Neil, Steve and Tottenham. If the deal doesn't get done, we'll see where we go from there. Have I got input into it? Yeah, 100 per cent. The boy obviously doesn't want to come back here, which I've got absolutely no issue with. He obviously sees his future away from here, and he had a brilliant season last season.

"We're expecting that deal to happen, but if it doesn't, then he's our player. From a club point of view, the deal has to be right. We're not trying to stand in the way of anybody. I've never done that as a manager, and I've had plenty of situations before where opportunities have come along to players.

"But there's always three parties involved in any deal, and it's got to be right for all three parties for it to happen. It's got to be right for the player, and obviously, from the noises, it sounds as though [Spurs] is where he wants to go. Tottenham want him, and we're prepared for that, but it's got to be right for us too. It all needs to marry up."
