Jamie O’Hara believes the decision to offer a new contract to Eric Dier shows that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy “hasn’t got a clue” about running a football team.
Reports suggest defender Dier is in talks over a new three-year deal as he enters the final season of his contract.
But former Spurs midfielder O’Hara has described Levy as a “brilliant businessman” but “horrendous” at building a football team, ahead of a pivtoal summer in which he would like to see “deadwood” players sold.
“Daniel Levy and the mob up there don’t have a clue what they’re doing, do they?” he told Grosvenor Sport. “It’s just a business and until you start getting rid of all the deadwood it won’t improve.
“They’ve offered Eric Dier a new three-year contract – the guy is just a back-up defender, it’s a joke. Levy is not making good football decisions right now.”
Levy will have the deciding vote on who to employ as Tottenham’s new manager after opting against popular potential targets including Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann.
Interim boss Ryan Mason has thrown his hat in the ring but O’Hara has named Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou as his ideal appointment.
“Tottenham should go after Postecoglu in the summer,” he stated. “He’s brilliant and Tottenham are a huge football club. If he got offered the job, there is no way he is turning it down – how could you?
“If he had the opportunity to manage Tottenham in the Europa League or Europa Conference League, or manage Celtic in the Champions League, you’re taking Tottenham. Celtic will get pumped in the Champions League and will be out in the group stages, then they’ll walk the league.
“Celtic are a huge football club but for Postecoglou’s career, there is no way in a million years he would turn Spurs down.”
