Tottenham confirm fourth January transfer exit as academy ace seals League One loan move

Tottenham midfielder Nile John has joined Charlton Athletic on loan for the remainder of the 2021/22 season.

Making his Spurs senior bow last February as Jose Mourinho gave him game time in the Europa League, the 18-year-old was again involved in European action at the beginning of this campaign under Nuno Espirito Santo.

A regular in Premier League 2 for the development squad, the Lilywhites have now elected to let the midfielder leave on a temporary basis to gain some vital first-team experience.

Tottenham head of coaching Chris Powell, who represented Charlton as both a player and manager, played his part in the deal and was alongside John for his arrival at the club's training base following his move.

Praising the impact of Powell when speaking to Charlton's official website about his move, John also stated that he cannot wait to get going at his new club.

"I'm over the moon, I’m really looking forward to it. I’m really excited to get out there and play for the fans and play for the badge," he said.

“Chris Powell is someone who I confide in – this connection with Charlton that he’s had and the history and how the fans have been, how the whole club is as a unit, allowed me to feel more welcomed. I’m really grateful for Chris that we’ve got this connection, this link together.”

Charlton boss Johnnie Jackson, formerly of Tottenham, added: “He is really excited to get going and we are excited to have him. We have seen him play and done our homework on him and for me personally having a relationship with Chris Powell, who is at Spurs now, I could tap into him and speak to him about the lad and just get a little bit more insight on him.

"Powelly was very complimentary of the boy both as a lad and as a player and said he will definitely come in and help us.”

John's move is the fourth exit from Tottenham this month following Kion Etete's loan move to Cheltenham Town, Dilan Markanday's permanent switch to Blackburn and Jack Clarke's Sunderland loan deal.
