Tottenham boss Antonio Conte urged to re-position Lucas Moura following transfer snub

It proved to be a frustrating January transfer window for Tottenham Hotspur and Antonio Conte in a number of ways, despite bringing in two new arrivals.

Spurs signed Juventus duo Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur on deadline day, while Conte was also able to trim down his midfield and loan out Tanguy Ndombele, Bryan Gil and Giovani Lo Celso, while Dele Alli left permanently.

But heading into January, Conte wanted a new right wing-back, midfielder and a striker, with Bentancur the only arrival in the middle of the park.

Adama Traore of Wolverhampton Wanderers was earmarked as the new wing-back, despite the fact he would have to adapt to this position, yet a move never materialised and he headed to Barcelona instead.

But there could be one current member of the Spurs squad who can transform himself into that unique position, with former Spurs player Graham Roberts believing Lucas Moura fits the bill.

Do you think Lucas Moura could operate as Tottenham’s new right wing back? Have your say in the comments section below.

Spurs currently have summer signing Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty as their right back’s who can play in that wing-back position, and while both are good options to have, Conte doubts the quality and consistency of both.

Hence why he was looking to find a new addition last month and Traore, with his sheer power and pace, was the favoured candidate.

But the former Aston Villa man wasn’t keen on Conte’s ideas to operate him in this position and therefore snubbed a switch to Spurs despite a £20m bid being lodged.

Now, Roberts believes that Moura should be given an opportunity in this position as he feels he has the necessary qualities to fulfil the role.

"Just putting it out there, why doesn’t our manager try Moura at right wing back? He’s quick, good player and he can cross the ball," Roberts tweeted.

"I think it’s worth a go maybe against Brighton? What do you all think?"

Roberts certainly hits the nail on the head when describing Moura’s qualities, and the Brazilian has often been a standout in the Spurs side this season.

The 29-year-old often plays in a wide role for the north London club and has contributed with six goals and five assists so far this season.

As with Traore, playing in a more defensive role would have to be explored but with his career experience, Moura may be able to pick it up better than what the Spaniard could.

Football.london also reports that Moura has made ten headed clearances and the sixth most tackles in the Tottenham team, more than a number of the defensive players.

These impressive stats certainly back up the claim made by Roberts, so it could certainly be a decision to ponder over for Conte.
