Tottenham will assess captain Heung-min Son to determine his availability for upcoming meetings with Ferencvaros and Brighton, while manager Ange Postecoglou has also offered an update on the injury sustained by Destiny Udogie against Manchester United.
Stylish Spurs cruised to a statement 3-0 Premier League victory at Old Trafford on Sunday - a result made all the more impressive given that they were without their influential skipper, who was forced off in the late stages of Thursday’s Europa League opener against Qarabag.
Son suffered hamstring fatigue in that game and Postecoglou said on Friday that he was unsure if he would be fit to face United, insisting that the player wanted to train over the weekend before a final decision was made.
However, the South Korean forward was omitted from Tottenham’s matchday squad at Old Trafford, with Postecoglou telling Sky Sports before the game: “Short turnaround obviously from Thursday night and he just wasn't right for today so we're going there without him.
“Yeah [it’s a blow for Tottenham], but we've had to sort of suffer those things a fair bit during my time here with key players missing out. We just have to learn to cope without him."
Postecoglou was quizzed again on Son’s status after a landmark win in Manchester, with another busy week coming up for Spurs ahead of the October international break with a trip to face Hungarian champions Ferencvaros on Thursday evening followed by a visit to Brighton in the Premier League next weekend.
"We'll see," said Postecoglou when asked if Son would be back for either of those matches this week.
"Obviously it was a quick turnaround today, so we'll assess it when we go back and get back down to London. We'll see how he is.”
Postecoglou also provided a positive-sounding update on left-back Udogie, who sustained a knock following an impressive first-half run against United and looked set to be replaced before he carried on and then eventually made way for Djed Spence at the interval.
"Destiny was ok,” Postecoglou said. “I mean he felt something in his quad but he obviously finished the half, but we just thought at half-time no point, we've got to be careful about how much we push our players.
“Obviously, Destiny had to come on pretty early on Thursday night, which wasn't the plan and I would say Micky [Van de Ven] played probably more than we wanted him to."
