Boris Johnson rang a Tory MP but the backbencher was so drunk he cannot remember what the Prime Minister wanted.
Mr Johnson has been calling Conservative MPs as he bids to shore up his embattled leadership.
The PM dialled up former Defence Minister Johnny Mercer - a prominent critic - but Mr Mercer soon forgot what the conversation was about.
The MP’s wife Felicity Cornelius-Mercer tweeted at 9.18pm on Saturday: “So..funny story…the Prime Minister rang tonight directly after an afternoon of FA Cup football and England rugby.
“And (her husband) was so p***** he can’t remember what was said.
“Thinking of winding him up tomorrow…I heard Johnny/Boris say………suggestions please.”
Mr Mercer posted this morning: “In other breaking news, wives have a mind and a life of their own.
“She’s on this nuts journey with me - the highs and many lows.
“She is more than entitled to take the p**s out of me/the PM/whoever she likes.”
It comes as embattled Boris Johnson faces a crunch week for his crisis-hit premiership as Tory MPs hold his fate in their hands.
The beleaguered Prime Minister reportedly hopes to limp through to Friday when the Commons goes into recess for February half-term.
But he could be just days away from a vote to oust him as rattled backbenchers continue to send Tory 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady letters demanding a no-confidence ballot.
Even the PM’s wife Carrie has reportedly told friends it might be preferable for her husband to quit No10.
“She was saying she had had enough a couple of weeks ago.
“She was telling friends the pressure on her was too much and she'd be happier if he left,” a source told the Sunday Times.
But the PM - who vowed this week he would be re-elected in 2024 and said "I've got a lot more to do" - claimed tanks would be needed to force him from Downing Street.
“He’s making very clear that they’ll have to send a Panzer division to get him out of there,” a source told the paper.
Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng admitted there was “fevered speculation” about how many letters Sir Graham has received, saying no-one really knew how many had been signed.
Some claims suggest the PM’s critics could be just a handful of letters away from securing a confidence ballot.
Mr Johnson spent the weekend building a new inner circle after five aides walked out in 24 hours last week.
The PM appointed former BBC journalist Guto Harri as his top spin doctor, and parachuted in Cabinet Office Minister Steve Barclay to be his chief of staff.
But three previous Chiefs of Staff voiced doubts over whether it'll be possible. Mr Barclay is already the £67,505 Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and the £81,932 MP for North East Cambridgeshire
Labour ’s deputy leader Angela Rayner said: "The Prime Minister has clearly run out of serious people willing to serve under his chaotic and incompetent leadership so now expects a Cabinet Minister to be his chief of staff.
“This is a farce. Being No10 chief of staff is a 24/7 job so if Steve Barclay is taking it on as his third job then Tory MPs and the public can have no confidence that the dysfunction in Downing Street will come to an end.”
