A TORY councillor has fumed at “idiot” Scots who are too “blinkered” to support England in the World Cup semi-final and are instead cheering on the “cheating ‘hand of god’ Argies”.
Moray councillor Tracy Colyer slammed Scots who are planning on supporting Argentina in their World Cup semi-final match against England on Wednesday, saying those who do should be “fecking ashamed”.
The councillor for Keith and Cullen made the comments on a Moray Communities Facebook post which congratulated England for their quarter-final win against Norway on Saturday.
The post also wished Thomas Tuchel’s team luck against Argentina.
However, more than a hundred Moray residents commented on the post saying they will be backing Lionel Messi's team in Wednesday night's clash, which then prompted Colyer’s scorn.
Colyer argued that Scots should get behind the England team due to the history of Scottish soldiers fighting in the Falklands War.
She wrote: “Come nowhere near me if you are supporting the cheating ‘hand of god’ Argies.
“For all you idiots out there that are blinkered, Scottish soldiers fought in the Falklands War in 1982.
“The 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards were a major part of the British forces deployed.
“They sailed to the islands in May 1982 aboard the Queen Elizabeth II and became part of the 5th Infantry Brigade.
“On the night of June 13-14, the Scots Guards took part in one of the final and fiercest battles of the war.
“They fought a difficult night battle using bayonets to capture the heavily defended Mount Tumbledown from Argentine forces.”
The term “Argies” is widely considered a derogatory term for Argentinians and has long been associated with the Falklands War.
The UK and Argentina fought over the Falkland Islands in 1982, where 255 British soldiers, three Falkland Islanders, and 649 Argentinians were killed during the 74-day conflict.
Colyer added: “So all you people who think you are dissing the English you are dissing your kin and shame on you!"
She concluded: "Hope you are fecking ashamed cos I am of you all.”
Many Scots have traditionally supported England's opponents at major footballing tournaments.
Scotland and England have the longest footballing rivalry, with both sets of fans regularly engaging in a back and forth about their teams.
England will play Argentina in the crunch match for a place in the World Cup final at 8pm on Wednesday in Atlanta.
