‘Torture’: Jurgen Klopp reveals he’s finally rewatched Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid

Jurgen Klopp has opened up on rewatching Liverpool’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid for the first time this week, ahead of their reunion in the last-16.

The Reds were beaten 1-0 in Paris last year in a final also remembered for the appalling treatment of their fans by local authorities.

Madrid head to Anfield on Tuesday for the first leg of their tie, compelling Klopp to finally sit down and review the footage.

“I didn’t watch it back until this weekend and I know why I didn’t watch it back now, it was proper torture,” he explained.

“We played a good game and could have won the game. They scored a decisive goal and we didn’t. You could see how experienced Madrid is.”

Liverpool come into the game after key back-to-back wins over Everton and Newcastle, allowing Klopp to feel more confident of his side’s chances.

Darwin Nunez is an injury doubt however, against a Real side off the pace in their LaLiga title defence.

“I am really happy we play it now,” he told reporters. “Four weeks ago it would have been different, but life is all about timing and maybe we found back our feet in time.

“Now we have these two results and hopefully we can build on that but now we need to play two super games. If we don't play our best we don't have a chance. Real Madrid don't have to play their best to still have a chance.”
