Pat the tortoise is set for a new home after soaring fuel bills forced his owner to put him up for adoption.
John O’Hare thought he and his mini Egyptian tortoise would be together for life but the spiralling cost of powering ultra-violet and infra-red lamps racked up massive bills.
After the Record told how John had to make the heartbreaking decision to offer Pat to a new owner, we were flooded with offers of help.
John will now choose Pat’s new pal after dozens of offers to give him a new home.
John, 54, who has epilepsy and chronic lung disease, said: “It breaks my heart to say goodbye but Pat deserves a good home, where he can be at the right temperature.
“I’m touched that loads of people have come forward, so I’m just hoping I can get a new owner who has all the equipment they need and maybe a bit of knowledge about keeping tortoises.
“Pat needs to be warm and he doesn’t hibernate, which makes him a good pet, as he likes a little bit of human interaction and getting out of his tank for a roam around.”
After gas and electricity bills rocketed, John, from Newport on Tay, Fife, was forced to agree a payment plan to settle Scottish Power bills, which have to come off his benefits.
