The 68 teams participating in the 2022 Women’s NCAA Tournament were announced on Sunday night, with the South Carolina Gamecocks earning the No. 1 overall seed. NC State, Stanford and Louisville round out the remaining No. 1 seeds.
Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks enter the tournament with a 29-2 overall record, and a 15-1 SEC record. They’ll have a potential star-studded matchup with Caitlin Clark and No. 2-seed Iowa in the Greensboro Region.
NC State, which heads the Bridgeport Region, will have to face a strong UConn team about an hour from their campus. Last year’s champ, Stanford, is holding it down in the Spokane Region, and Louisville clung to the last No. 1 seed spot and is heading up the Wichita Region.
This is the first season that there are 68 teams selected, First Four games are being played and that the women’s tournament is utilizing the March Madness and Final Four logos and branding.
Women’s March Madness gets underway on Wednesday, March 16 with the First Four games.
