Top RVs On RVshare To See If Vanlife Is Right For You

Listen to this article

Social media’s version of #vanlife may have sold you on the lifestyle’s glamorous side, but the reality between Instagram snaps can be more sobering. Vanlife isn’t for everyone; only a certain type of person chooses to live in a space meant for delivering packages. So if you’re considering buying or building a camper van, you owe it to yourself, your spouse, and your bank account to try it out on a temporary basis by renting one from RVshare first.

The web’s largest RV-renting platform offers all types of camper vans, from six-figure vans manufactured by established companies to unique home-builds. Just enter where you live or would like to rent from and set the site’s filter for “Class B,” which is the designation given to van conversions by the RV industry.

We’ll even get you started. Below is our list of five amazing camper vans to rent on RVshare. You can rent any of these camper vans right now, or look for similar models available where you live.

2022 Thor Scope

  • $218 per night
  • Sleeps 2
  • 18-feet long

Let’s begin our list with a camper van from an established manufacturer that offers a full suite of features. This 2022 Thor Scope is built on the Ram Promaster platform and sleeps two on a couch that converts into a bed.

The best thing about the Scope is that it somehow fits a kitchen, bathroom with shower, and combination lounge/sleeping area in a van under 18 feet in length. There’s even an onboard generator and rooftop solar panels to keep you powered in any situation.

A brand new Scope starts around $114,000, so renting one for a little over $200 per night before you commit big money to buy one is just good sense.

2016 Ford Transit Custom Camper Van

  • $240 per night
  • Sleeps 2
  • 22-feet long

The Ford Transit is another model that’s often used for camper vans, and this one is a custom build where no expense was spared. It features a fixed bed in the rear that’s suspended over a large garage with a giant slide-out cargo platform. There’s a large shower ahead of the bed on one side, and a full kitchen with a big sink, gas range, and extra countertop space on the other.

The unique thing about this camper van is its particularly large fresh water tank, which can hold 42 gallons of water. Most campervans have tanks that only hold around 20-30 gallons. Water is a big limiting factor when camping, so this Transit is well suited to spending a long time away from home.

Custom-built camper vans can often cost more than factory models, which makes this one’s $240 per night rental fee an easy pill to swallow.

2022 Winnebago Revel

  • $225 per night
  • Sleeps 2
  • 19.7-feet long

The Winnebago Revel is a camper van that appears on many top RV lists, including ours. Not only does it offer a full-size bed thanks to its side wall extenders, but there’s a kitchen, full bath with shower, and lounge area with four seats when you swivel the driver and passenger seat around. But that’s not why the Revel is so popular; the real reason is four-wheel drive.

Just looking at the Revel’s ground clearance and aggressive tires, you can tell it’s built for trails more than toll roads. Built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter platform, it features a 4x4 drivetrain mated to a diesel 3.0-liter V6 engine that can achieve up to 24 miles per gallon – an incredibly high number for an RV.

We’ve never met an unhappy Revel owner, but you should still rent first if you’re thinking of buying. A new one from Winnebago starts at $210,000, but this one rents for just $225 per night.

1991 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia

  • $269 per night
  • Sleeps 4
  • 15.1-feet long

Vanlife started with Volkswagen vans, so we wanted to include one on this list for those who desire the purest experience of this lifestyle. We found this 1991 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia for rent on RVshare that’s unique in some nice ways.

For one, this Vanagon has had its original VW engine replaced with a more modern and powerful Subaru engine. Struggling to maintain 55 miles per hour up a mountain pass will not be a problem for you.

Secondly, unlike the rest of the camper vans in this list, the Westfalia is a weekender model, meaning it’s not intended for long-term living. There are still people who choose to live full-time in VW vans, but they’re foregoing amenities like a toilet and shower. There is a kitchen sink and small refrigerator, but cooking over a campfire will be your primary kitchen.

Despite being the smallest camper van on this list with a length of just 15.1 feet, the Westfalia is the only one that sleeps more than two people. Its rear bench seat folds down into a bed for two and the pop-top raises to reveal a sleeping area for another pair.

Truthfully, we’d feel more comfortable renting a VW van like this rather than owning one ourselves. The latter requires a high level of mechanical intimacy with your machine in order to keep it going; these little German vans were assembled more than 25 years ago with some being decades older than that.

2021 Airstream Interstate 19

  • $400 per night
  • Sleeps 2
  • 19.7-feet long

Airstream is the Bentley of the RV world. This Interstate 19 is its smallest and most affordable model, and yet the price tag is still six figures and begins with a 2. If you want to live #poshvanlife, an Airstream touring coach like this one is the way to go.

Looking at the interior you can tell the Interstate 19 is made with far higher quality materials than the other campervans on our list. Luxury is its raison d’etre, and it reeks of it. The bed is the largest you’ll find in any Class B, the window shades and interior lighting are customizable and remote-controlled, and leather is everywhere. At 19-feet-long, though, this diesel-powered, Sprinter-based van is still short enough to be maneuverable and fit in standard parking spots.

Renting this Interstate 19 will give you a taste of what it’s like to own one, thanks to its hefty $400 per night fee. Its long list of 5-star reviews, though, suggests it’s worth every penny.
