Top gastropub boss pleads with customers to stop stealing cutlery

The owner and chef of one of the UK's best gastropubs has pleaded with customers to stop stealing the restaurant cutlery. Chef Luke Payne took to social media to call out the cheeky behaviour after cutlery went missing from the acclaimed Pack Horse pub in Hayfield, Derbyshire.

The pub is rated no 32 in the top 50 gastropubs in the UK and is mentioned in the Michelin Guide. It sits in the picturesque village of Hayfield in the Peak District.

But chef and owner Luke has been left frustrated after the disappearance of knives and forks from the pub in recent weeks. He sent out a post on Twitter which was swiftly backed by followers.

In the tweet he said: "I’d really like people to stop stealing our cutlery please. It’s expensive, and actually quite difficult to get hold of at the moment."

Followers said they couldn't believe the cheek of some guests. While other hospitality business owners sent their support - revealing the sorts of things rude customers swipe from their establishments too.

Simon Parsons tweeted: "What is wrong with people today." While Lucy Jones tweeted: "No way…. But it would seem from the comments that you aren’t the only ones. How awful."

Chef Fran Joyce posted a picture of mini gravy pans that are used on guest's plates. She said: "I had 10 of these, now I have 4!"

Leeds-based chef @Shelleymcshell posted: "I have bought 600 forks! They are not that great and still go awol! I am going to start giving those horrible wooden ones!"

While the owners of The Long Arms in Wiltshire revealed the rather long arms of their customers. Tweeting about the issue, they said: "Mate, teaspoons... we’ve had salt and pepper, toilet rolls, bins from the toilet and automatic air fresheners pinched before. Mind boggles."

The Pack Horse is mentioned in the Michelin Guide and hailed for its friendly welcome, hearty dishes and real ales. Its recommendation says: "Real ales and weekly quiz nights help this traditional stone pub to remain a true village local. Characterful open fires mix with warm, contemporary décor, and it’s run by a friendly team."

It is based in the historic village of Hayfield which is a popular visitor destination, particularly with walkers thanks to its proximity to Kinder Scout, the highest point of the Peak District.
