Top Edinburgh chef hits back after diner moans about '£5 for bread' at his restaurant

Popular Scottish Chef Dean Banks has hit back at an irate diner who complained about having to pay £5 for bread at his Edinburgh restaurant.

The former MasterChef: The Professionals contestant took to social media to make his thoughts heard. The review was posted to Tripadvisor on August 13, critiquing Dean Banks new West End Edinburgh restaurant “Dulse”.

While the customer was delighted with most of the new seafood restaurants offerings, when he asked for a piece of bread to mop up the remains on his plate he was incensed that it would cost him £5. The customer said that this move would stop him from ever returning.

The critic posted: “I asked a waiter for a piece of bread to mop up the remains of the quite stunning curry sauce in which my cod had been served.

“£5 for the bread, I was told.

“That was a particularly stupid and particularly short-sighted business decision. It meant that, instantly, we decided we would never return, never bring our guests or visitors here and would be unlikely to recommend the restaurant to anyone else.

"The price, I’m afraid of bread.”

However, Banks hit out at the negative review, pointing out that the growing cost of living crisis is putting a strain on businesses across the country. Posting a screenshot of the review with his comments, Banks pointed out that restaurant prices have to account for a whole host of extra costs including staff, VAT and bills.

Posting to Twitter, Banks said: “The price of Bread! Has this d****e read a newspaper or watched the news recently?

“£5 = 20% VAT, £4 to the business, 35% staff cost, 30% food cost, 12% rent & Utilities, Then we have rates, insurances, booking system, till system, WiFi, investment costs, marketing.

“Free Bread!"
