A top detective has branded the murder of Alan Jamieson as a 'tragic and needless loss'.
The Kilmarnock man, also known as 'Cat', was slain while on the phone to his partner in September last year.
At the High Court in Glasgow yesterday, Gary Muir yesterday admitted murdering the 38-year-old.
Muir, 39, was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 14 years and eight months.
Detective chief inspector Mick Carr of Police Scotland said that Muir will now face justice for his actions.
DCI Carr added: "Our thoughts are with the friends and family of Alan as they continue to come to terms with his tragic and needless loss.
“Muir will now face justice for his actions, which will hopefully bring some closure for them and allow them to move on.
“I would like to this opportunity to thank members of the public, who came forward and assisted our enquiries."
After being stabbed while on the phone to his girlfriend Angela Sawyers, Alan told her: "I've just been stabbed - he stabbed me in the jugular."
The court was told that Muir was in a long-term relationship with Miss Sawyers which ended in January 2021.
And Alan entered a relationship with Miss Sawyers for a year up to his death.
After the attack, Alan tried to speak but was not clear due to gurgling blood.
Mr Jamieson was heard to state: "I'm dying" before being found and tended to by neighbours.
Muir later spoke to Miss Sawyers' sister and told her: "It was me that done it."
When asked what he meant, he replied: "Stabbed Cat."
The following day, a knife containing DNA of both men was found on a grass embankment underneath a bridge.
A wound to an artery with a depth of six to seven centimetres was found when Alan arrived at hospital. And despite the hospital's best efforts, he died six days later with the cause of death being "stab wound of neck."
