A jobs-for-mates scandal that led to a top cop's sacking has prompted an overhaul of senior police recruitment in a crime-troubled jurisdiction.

The latest shake-up for Northern Territory Police comes on top of accusations of racism against the force following nationwide anger over the deaths in custody of two young Aboriginal men.
