Top Boy new series announced with huge billboard in central London

Fans have been driven wild as Netflix finally announced that Top Boy will be returning to the streaming service.

The latest series of the hit British crime drama, starring Ashley Walters, Kano and Jasmine Jobson, has been hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, and filming was originally due to begin in spring 2020.

However, that was delayed due to the outbreak of coronavirus and the subsequent lockdowns, meaning Top Boy fans have been waiting three years for the show to return.

Netflix shared a brief 10-second time-lapse clip of a huge poster for the show being put up in London’s Waterloo, confirming it would be returning on 18 March.

“We know you’ve been asking for the Top Boy date for a while now… so we put it on London’s biggest billboard to clear things up once and for all. TOP BOY RETURNS MARCH 18,” the caption read.

“YESSSSS GET IN, BEST NEWS I COULD'VE RECEIVED ALL DAY!” one fan wrote.

“Top boy is coming back!!! it’s been way too long!!!” another tweeted. “Is it coming back? YESSSSSSSS At last,” one added.

“New season of Top Boy?? Time to dust off the blue north face,” another quipped.

Ashley, who has played Dushane Hill in the show since it began in 2011, also teased details of the new season, and shared a snap of the partly finished billboard.

“Tomorrow,” he captioned the snap, prompting his fans to go into overdrive.

Top Boy first aired on Channel 4 back in 2011, but was cancelled in 2013.

Rapper Drake helped to bring the show back six years later, when it was snapped up by streaming giant Netflix, and released to critical acclaim.

It went on to become one of the most popular Netflix series of the year, and despite setbacks due to the Covid pandemic, cameras began rolling for the streaming service's second season in December 2020.

Early last year, Ashley teased details of the upcoming season, and said he’s bringing a new perspective to the show as he’s now serving as one of the executive producers.

“The scripts are really good, really tight,” he told NME. “We’re coming at it from a new perspective this time, because I’m executive producing on this one, so creatively and script-wise I’m much more involved.

“It’s been difficult, but rest assured to everyone listening or watching, we’ve got another banger for ya. It’s definitely going to be good,” he teased.
