British drivers have revealed the best scenic roads to drive in the UK – with Scotland's North Coast 500 taking the top spot. A poll of 2,000 motorists found that nearly three-quarters (72 per cent) believe the UK has some of the most scenic roads in the world.
And it seems that nowhere is this better showcased than along the 516 miles of breath-taking coastal scenery, rugged mountains, and sandy beaches in northern Scotland, starting and ending at Inverness Castle. Moving further south into England, the road from Kendal to Keswick, in the Lake District, took second place on the list – followed by the winding road through Cheddar Gorge, in Somerset.
The A39 road, from Minehead in Somerset to Barnstaple in Devon, also made the top 10 list, as well as The Black Mountain Pass in the Brecon Beacons, Wales. It also emerged more than three-quarters of drivers (78 per cent) prefer to take the scenic route when travelling to a destination – to make the most of the view.
