Tony Watt wins Dundee United red card appeal as SFA overturn controversial VAR decision

Dundee United striker Tony Watt has had his red card rescinded following a successful SFA appeal.

The United hierarchy have decided to challenge the sending-off for his first-half tackle on Sean Goss in their 1-0 defeat to Motherwell at Tannadice. Referee John Beaton didn’t even give a foul in the game but was then asked to go to the pitch-side monitor by the match VAR chief David Munro.

Beaton was shown footage before he returned to the pitch he decided to show Watt a straight red card. There are limited camera angles in VAR in Scotland and footage from other sources has now cast doubt on whether the challenge was worthy of an ordering off, which sparked the Dundee United appeal.

The SFA have now overturned the red card call and he will be free to face Celtic. A Dundee United statement read: "Following a fast-track Scottish FA hearing, the sending off Tony received has been rescinded and replaced with a caution.

"Tony was dismissed after a VAR review of his 40th minute challenge with Sean Goss. At the time, it was interpreted that Tony has been guilty of Serious Foul Play but this has been downgraded to a caution under the offence ‘Reckless tackles or challenges an opponent.’
