Tony Award-Winning Actor Linda Lavin Dies At 87

Linda Lavin, the acclaimed stage actor known for her Tony Award-winning performances and her iconic role as Alice Hyatt in the TV sitcom 'Alice,' has died at the age of 87. Her representative confirmed that Lavin passed away in Los Angeles on Sunday due to complications from recently discovered lung cancer.

After finding success on Broadway, Lavin transitioned to Hollywood in the mid-1970s, where she was cast as the lead in the CBS sitcom 'Alice,' based on the film 'Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.' The show, which aired from 1976 to 1985, showcased Lavin as a widowed mother working in a roadside diner, earning her a place as a role model for working moms.

'Alice' became a hit series, with Lavin's portrayal of Alice Hyatt resonating with audiences. The show's catchphrase, 'Kiss my grits,' became popular, and Lavin's performance was praised for its authenticity and charm.

Throughout her career, Lavin continued to excel, winning a Tony Award for her role in Neil Simon's 'Broadway Bound' in 1987. She remained active in the entertainment industry, with recent projects including a Netflix series titled 'No Good Deed' and a forthcoming Hulu series called 'Mid-Century Modern.'

Originally from Portland, Maine, Lavin moved to New York City after college and made a name for herself in the entertainment world. Her talent was recognized early on by legendary producer Hal Prince, who gave her a significant opportunity in the Broadway musical 'It's a Bird ... It's a Plane ... It's Superman.'

Over the years, Lavin's career flourished, with notable performances in various plays and TV shows. She received critical acclaim for her roles in productions like 'Collected Stories' and 'The Lyons,' earning Tony nominations for her outstanding work.

Outside of her acting career, Lavin and her husband, Steve Bakunas, established the Red Barn Studio Theatre in Wilmington, North Carolina, showcasing their passion for the arts and supporting the local theater community.
